Life Cycle Engineers are traditionally responsible for providing in-service technical support of Defence products to ensure their safe, reliable and disruption free operation. Within the future programmes team in Bristol (GCAP), they bring a strong customer and engineering focus to influence the design and to affect the maturity of the product across the life cycle to meet customer and business needs to ensure Design Intent is met.

What you will be doing

As the Customer Engineering interface, you will work with Operators, Partners, Airframers, Regulatory Authorities and Subject Matter Experts to identify and develop through life service and support solutions.

  • Influence new product design with in-service experience and develop support strategies across the product lifecycle to suit customer and business requirements.
  • Manage issues that impact the Maturity, Supportability, Lifecycle Cost, Reliability and Maintainability of the system to maintain Design Intent.
  • Lead and integrate Health Monitoring system requirements, including identifying requirements for new Health Monitoring Systems or capabilities.
  • Provide modelling of through life performance, deterioration mechanisms and service attributes to create / maintain time on platform prediction, identify opportunities for optimisation and support the generation of the Service Operation Validation Strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with requirements and adhere to technical / business requirements of internal & external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver technical communications (e.g. presentation and/or reports) to platform provider, regulators, customers, internal stakeholder.
  • Identify cost reduction opportunities by reviewing and maintaining life cycle engineering policies and any associated maintenance planning documentation.
  • Set reliability targets (such operational disruption metrics) based on historical data and monitor performance against targets. Predict future safety and reliability performance based on failure rates, adopting statistical techniques to support Numerical Risk Assessment, Parametric Distribution and fly forward analysis.

To be successful in the role you will need to have:

  • You will be qualified to degree level in a STEM subject and with experience in a relevant engineering environment (Mechanical, Aeronautical, Electrical or Controls).
  • A broad understanding of Gas Turbine physical & functional characteristics, and familiarity of the in-service operation environment, including regulatory and compliance requirements, would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of components/ systems functionality and numerical methods.
  • Experience of working on complex tasks that are novel and ambiguous.
  • You will be expected to take the lead in identifying project requirements, specifying and executing packages of work so experience in supporting/leading cross-functional teams (e.g. specialists, suppliers, customers, partners) is desirable
