Job summary

BSI in Hemel Hempstead is seeking a Test Engineer for the Life Protection equipment lab. You will perform hands-on mechanical testing, operate test rigs and analyse results to ensure life-saving respirators meet British and International standards.

As a permanent, full-time role (36 hours per week) you will set up tests, prepare samples, write clear reports and maintain equipment, while liaising with colleagues and customers to improve testing methods and processes.

Qualifications

• Minimum of HNC/HND or equivalent in a Mechanical Engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in a test environment.
• Strong written reporting skills and clear communication.
• Good level of computer literacy and MS Office proficiency.
• Positive customer-focused approach to work and communication with colleagues.
• Ability to follow defined processes precisely and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to tight time scales.
• Familiarity with Lean culture/tools and knowledge of 17025 is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Carry out physical and performance testing of respiratory products
• Prepare samples and set up test equipment and rigs correctly
• Run tests safely, consistently and in line with procedures
• Record results accurately and maintain clear, traceable test records
• Write test reports
• Support routine checks, calibration activities and upkeep of equipment
• Work in accordance with our quality management system (ISO 17025)
• Contribute to continuous improvement of methods, equipment and ways of working
• Assist with the laboratory Lean 5s improvement program
