A Local Authority SEMH school is looking for a committed Level 3 Teaching Assistant (Special) to support disadvantaged pupils. The role requires establishing positive relationships and delivering tailored interventions, aimed at raising achievement in a diverse educational environment. Applicants should possess resilience, a positive attitude, and NVQ3 qualifications to apply for this important position starting in September 2025.

Elmwood School is an expanding Local Authority SEMH school in the leafy suburb of Rushall in Walsall. The school currently has 83 mixed 11-16 year olds on roll split into three discreet areas. Due to the LA commitment to growth within the Special Needs Sector this number is likely to increase to 127 in September 2025.
We offer a wide and personalised curriculum catering for a range of abilities up to and including GCSEs / BTEC’s. We are looking for innovative people who are capable of establishing positive relationships working with young people with complex needs. You must have high expectations, flexibility and resilience. If you are passionate about making a difference and genuinely care for pupils who are on the brink of social exclusion, then we would love to meet you.
You will be required to work in a classroom setting and/or on a 1:1 basis, to support some of our disadvantaged young people, with the aim of raising achievement. A specific strength in delivering interventions to reluctant learners would be beneficial.
Primary based Teaching Assistants are also welcome to apply as we appreciate the skills you possess with some of our younger pupils.
You must have:
• NVQ3 for Teaching Assistants, or equivalent (working towards NVQ3 would be considered)
• A positive attitude
• Resilience
• Willingness to work with challenging pupils
• Be physically fit and capable of implementing the principles of Team Teach (Physical Interventions) – once suitably trained
• Very good numeracy/literacy skills
• Willingness to drive school transport (if applicable)
You will need to understand and comply with the general requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act, 1974, and be prepared to attend training courses, if appropriate.
