Job description

Level 2 Database Developer/Administrator

Wessex Group is hiring a Level 2 Database Developer/Administrator to support our PostgreSQL database infrastructure. This role is vital to keeping our systems available and reliable.

You will join a skilled technical team, working on schema design, performance tuning, data migrations, and automation in a Linux environment. This hands-on role offers meaningful project work and the opportunity to build experience towards more senior or architectural positions.

The Role

As a Level 2 Database Developer/Administrator, you will maintain and improve our production PostgreSQL systems. You will monitor database health, optimise queries, manage access controls, and contribute to database design decisions.

You will also support systems behind daily operations—preparing data for reports, writing clear and efficient SQL queries, and ensuring business outputs are accurate.

Key tasks include performance tuning, disaster recovery planning, and applying security best practices. You will work closely with developers and IT colleagues to keep our data infrastructure secure, efficient, and reliable.

This role suits someone who thrives in a technically focused environment and has a proactive mindset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain PostgreSQL database health, availability, and performance
  • Optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and views
  • Implement and manage access controls using least-privilege security principles
  • Collaborate on schema design and structural improvements
  • Execute and document data migrations and integrations
  • Support application developers by providing data access, query assistance, and guidance on database usage
  • Support client reporting by developing and maintaining queries, views, and data structures for automated and ad hoc reporting
  • Manage and test disaster recovery processes, including backup integrity checks
  • Apply security patches and assist in system hardening
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of systems, configurations, and processes
  • Support broader IT operations, including infrastructure and security tasks
What We’re Looking For
  • Hands-on experience administering databases in live production environments
  • Proficiency with Linux server management and command-line tools
  • Understanding of database access controls, encryption, and compliance concerns
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a methodical mindset
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with technical colleagues
  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Certifications in PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server
Why join Wessex Group?

We are a growing, forward-looking company with a strong technical foundation and a commitment to excellence. As part of our team, you will benefit from:

  • A say in technical decisions and future infrastructure planning
  • Supportive, collaborative team environment
  • Clear career progression and support for certification
  • 35-hour work week, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm (flexitime operated)
  • 10% non-contributory pension
  • Life cover (4 times annual salary)
  • Annual company bonus
