We advise on construction aspects of all types of commercial real estate development and investment, as well as engineering and infrastructure projects - the team works across a wide variety of sectors advising clients in the public and private sectors including developers, contractors and funders. We have an impressive client base and deal with many high profile and high value projects across the UK (as well as some international projects). Our team has significantly grown over the last 5 years and as we continue to win more work and new clients, we are looking for another senior colleague to continue to support and further develop the practice.

Job Title: Senior Associate / Legal Director

Location:Ideally, the candidate will be located in Edinburgh or Glasgow, however, this is flexible - we advise on matters throughout the UK and some members of our team are remote workers.

Job Profile:

As a Legal Director or Senior Associate in our Transactional Construction team, you will play a pivotal role in advising clients on a wide range of legal matters related to construction and infrastructure projects. This position offers the opportunity to work to work in a stimulating and creative working environment and be part of an ambitious and friendly team.

Core Tasks:

  • Advise and work with a broad cross section of developers, contractors, funders and professionals on transactional construction matters and work closely with our Real Estate team in particular. Advise on stand-alone construction/engineering projects (both on developer side and advising contractors in relation to main building contract terms and sub-contracts).
  • Advising on the construction aspects of some cutting-edge energy projects.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and point of contact.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated legal solutions tailored to clients' needs. Stay abreast of industry trends, legal developments, and best practices in construction law. Mentor and support junior team members, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Contribute to business development initiatives, including client pitches and proposals.
  • Participate in thought leadership activities, such as writing articles and delivering presentations.
  • Be aware of Brodies’ information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.

Person Specification:

  • Qualified solicitor in Scotland or England & Wales with a minimum of 7-8 years of post-qualification experience in transactional construction.
  • Proven track record of advising clients on complex construction projects and related legal matters.
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts, including JCT, NEC, and FIDIC forms as well as bespoke contracts.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality work and exceptional client service.
  • Commercial awareness and strategic thinking.
