Placements24 is seeking a Legal Counsel to join a forward-thinking technology and media group in Randburg, Gauteng. The role focuses on data privacy, IP, software licensing, and regulatory compliance within the TMT sector.

The successful candidate will advise on technology transactions, manage IP portfolios, and draft complex contracts, while collaborating across business units in a hybrid work setup.

Formación

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with 6+ years post-qualification experience in TMT law
• Strong knowledge of data privacy laws and IP/digital media regulations
• Experience drafting and negotiating complex technology and media contracts
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Ability to understand technical concepts relevant to TMT industry
• Proactive risk identification and mitigation
• In-house experience or exposure to TMT clients valued

Responsabilidades

• Advise on technology transactions: software licensing, SaaS, IT outsourcing
• Counsel on data protection and privacy regulations (POPIA, GDPR)
• Manage and protect IP portfolio: trademarks, patents, copyrights
• Draft, review, negotiate commercial agreements in TMT (content licensing, advertising, partnerships)
• Ensure compliance with media regulations, broadcasting laws, telecom policies
• Support product development teams on legal/regulatory considerations
• Conduct legal research and analyze emerging TMT issues
• Manage external counsel on specialized matters and litigation
• Assist in corporate governance and compliance for TMT
• Develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders

About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking technology and media conglomerate, is seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel to join their thriving practice. This role, based in our Randburg, Gauteng office, will focus on the rapidly evolving Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) sector. You will provide essential legal support on matters including data privacy, intellectual property, digital media, software licensing, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the unique legal challenges and opportunities within the TMT landscape. Key Responsibilities

• Advise on legal aspects of technology transactions, including software licensing, SaaS agreements, and IT outsourcing.
• Provide counsel on data protection and privacy regulations (e.g., POPIA, GDPR).
• Manage and protect the company's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements within the TMT space, such as content licensing, advertising, and partnership agreements.
• Ensure compliance with media regulations, broadcasting laws, and telecommunications policies.
• Support product development teams on legal and regulatory considerations.
• Conduct legal research and provide analysis on emerging legal issues in the TMT sector.
• Manage external counsel on specialized matters and litigation.
• Assist in corporate governance and compliance matters related to the TMT business.
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders across various departments.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with a minimum of 6 years of post-qualification experience, with a demonstrable focus on TMT law.
• Strong knowledge of data privacy laws, intellectual property rights, and digital media regulations.
• Experience in drafting and negotiating complex technology and media-related contracts.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to understand and advise on technical concepts relevant to the TMT industry.
• Strong negotiation skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Proactive approach to identifying and mitigating legal risks.
• Experience working in-house or with significant exposure to TMT clients is highly valued.
• Familiarity with the South African regulatory landscape for technology, media, and telecommunications is essential.
• Willingness to work from our Randburg, Gauteng office with a hybrid flexibility.
