Job Description:

Legal Counsel - Dispute Resolution

Hymans Robertson has a fantastic track record of resolving issues that arise as part of doing business and strives to maintain that. We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our in-house legal team as Legal Counsel with a strong dispute resolution and/or pensions background within either our Glasgow or Edinburgh Office. You will join a team of 14 lawyers, including two in Dispute Resolution.

What will your role look like?

Our services are varied and interesting, supporting the group in areas such as pensions (including actuarial, investment, and administration), financial services, and financial planning for individuals. You won't be required to attend court; however, research, drafting, and litigation skills will be useful for investigating issues, understanding causes, and supporting client and operations teams to achieve positive outcomes for clients, the firm, and pension scheme members.

You will act as an internal consultant, advising and working with people at all levels of the business. Building relationships, gaining credibility, and influencing others constructively are essential skills for this role.

Your key tasks will include:

  1. Providing pragmatic legal advice on disputes and related issues escalated to the legal team.
  2. Collaborating with stakeholders to understand issues, direct investigations, and recommend resolutions.
  3. Drafting legal documents and working with external legal advisors when necessary.
  4. Managing external legal relationships and budgets.
  5. Providing legal input on complaints through pension dispute resolution procedures or involving regulatory bodies.
  6. Offering legal advice on data breaches in collaboration with Data Protection Officers.
  7. Responding to client due diligence queries and tenders.
  8. Presenting to internal governance groups to seek consent, highlight trends, and build consensus.
  9. Engaging with brokers, insurers, and supporting insurance renewals and reporting.
  10. Working with Finance on monthly meetings and audits.
  11. Staying updated on legal developments and implementing changes accordingly.
  12. Drafting best practice notes, developing policies, and assisting in training.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualified Solicitor in Scotland or England.
  • Experience in dispute resolution and/or pensions, preferably in regulated financial services or professional services environments.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and confident approach.
  • Ability to challenge stakeholders constructively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Pragmatic, solutions-oriented, and able to use judgment and initiative.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience in pensions or financial services industry.
  • Knowledge of Pensions Ombudsman/Financial Ombudsman processes.
  • Understanding of actuarial standards and FCA regulations.

Additional Information:

This role offers a competitive salary, profit share, flexible benefits, a collaborative environment, mental health support, development opportunities, social activities, and hybrid working arrangements. Early application is recommended as we recruit on a rolling basis.
