Job summary

Taylor Root is seeking a Commercially focused in-house Legal Counsel to support a rapidly expanding Capital Projects division. The role covers construction, commercial contracting and strategic business partnering, with exposure to senior leadership.

You will advise on end-to-end project life cycles, negotiate contracts, manage disputes, and provide pragmatic legal guidance to enable growth while mitigating risk. A strong background in NEC/JCT contracts is essential.

Qualifications

• 2–6 years' PQE, with potential for outside this range.
• Strong experience advising on construction projects and commercial agreements.
• Excellent knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts.
• Experience supporting upstream and downstream contractual arrangements.
• Solid understanding of commercial contract law.
• Knowledge of TUPE, data protection, competition law and IP in a commercial environment.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Practical, pragmatic and business-oriented advice.

Responsibilities

• Advising on and negotiating a broad range of construction and commercial agreements.
• Providing specialist advice on standard form construction contracts, including NEC and JCT contracts.
• Supporting senior project stakeholders on strategic and operational legal matters.
• Advising on disputes involving customers, contractors and suppliers, including management of external counsel where required.
• Drafting, reviewing and maintaining standard contract documentation and precedents.
• Monitoring legal and regulatory developments and advising on their impact on the business.
• Partnering with stakeholders across Operations, Commercial, Procurement, People, Tax, IT, Health & Safety and Compliance functions.
• Providing commercially focused legal advice that supports growth while appropriately managing risk.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel to join a highly regarded in-house legal team supporting a rapidly growing Capital Projects division.

This newly created position reports to the Head of Legal. The role offers a unique chance to work on a combination of construction, commercial contracting and strategic business partnering matters with regular exposure to senior leadership across the organisation.

As the projects portfolio continues to expand, the legal team is seeking a commercially minded lawyer who can help support complex project delivery while enabling the business to achieve its commercial objectives.

The Role

You will provide legal support throughout the full lifecycle of projects and commercial transactions, from early-stage bids and contract negotiations through to project delivery and contract exit arrangements.

Key responsibilities include:

• Advising on and negotiating a broad range of construction and commercial agreements.
• Providing specialist advice on standard form construction contracts, including NEC and JCT contracts.
• Supporting senior project stakeholders on strategic and operational legal matters.

About You

You will ideally have:

• A minimum of 2-6 years' PQE, although candidates outside this range will be considered where they can demonstrate the relevant experience and potential.
• Strong experience advising on construction projects, construction contracts and commercial agreements.
• Excellent knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts.
• Experience supporting both upstream and downstream contractual arrangements.
• A solid understanding of commercial contract law.
• Knowledge of areas such as TUPE, data protection, competition law and intellectual property in a commercial environment.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• The ability to provide concise, pragmatic, and commercially focused legal advice.
• A proactive, collaborative, and business-oriented approach.
