Job description

Legal Counsel - Brand Brand (Digital & Technology Projects)

Reports to: Senior Legal Counsel (Team Lead)

Location: This role will be based at our Head Office in Poole, Dorset.

Salary: We provide a competitive compensation package reflecting your skills and expertise.

Diversity matters

We are building a brand that represents the people of the world. It's what you do that counts, and we are always looking to expand perspectives and voices to shape our future.

We see you, we celebrate you, we want you!

Who we are

You might know us as the inventors of the bath bomb, but there's more to this great-smelling, partly employee-owned, family-run company than pioneering cosmetics. We believe our business should put more back into the world than it takes and demonstrate that capitalism can be a force for good.

The Living Wage Foundation's statement 'a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay' is one that we are proud to commit to in the UK. As an accredited Living Wage employer, we put our people first and fight cruel practices like animal testing, promote regeneration, and show that it is what's inside that counts - whether that's an ingredient in a product, or the minerals in a smartphone.

The Team

The Legal Brand Team provides commercial support to multiple business units within the Lush group, including PR, Communications, Concepts & Collaborations, B2B, Events, Marketing, Brand and Digital (consumer-facing projects) and associated marketing, creative, and partnership teams.

The Role

We are looking for an outstanding lawyer with experience in marketing and commercial contracts who is commercially astute and passionate about business partnering to support the Senior Legal Counsel and brand (Consumer, Marketing, and Advertising) strategically as part of our in-house Brand Legal team.

Our commercial colleagues describe their ideal lawyer as hands-on, super sharp, and switched-on-flexible, friendly, and up for a challenge!

This role will support teams in PR, Communications, Collaborations, B2B, Events, Marketing, Digital (consumer-facing promotions), and Brand. It will work closely with the commercial leads in these areas and their global counterparts to support the contracting requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity to provide first-class legal service as a strategic legal partner to our commercial colleagues in an innovative and dynamic environment.

Please note: We may close this vacancy early if we receive an overwhelming response or our business requirements change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Your role will predominantly focus on Digital and technology, but you will also pick up commercial work for the relevant teams.
  • You will support our teams by advising them on campaign compliance, marketing copy, prize promotions, direct marketing, consumer law, CAP Codes compliance, and supervision, review, and approval of global brand licensing partnerships.
  • Strong commercial acumen across various advertising matters and be comfortable taking commercial decisions and working closely with senior sales, marketing and creative leads.
  • You must be capable of reviewing, negotiating and drafting the following types of contracts: creative services and PR agency agreements, influencer and talent agreements, sponsorship contracts, IP licence agreements, and collaboration deals.
  • You will be expected to deliver regular training sessions to the business and have a genuine interest in developing legal knowledge within the business.
  • You will thrive in an environment that asks you to deliver at pace, juggle competing priorities, support bespoke initiatives to increase customer engagement and develop brand-building opportunities and bring your experience and enthusiasm to respond to an ambitious business that is growing fast. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career in a company that values innovation, creativity and pragmatism in its legal community.
  • You will collaborate effectively with global, regional, and local cross-functional teams (including Finance, Digital, IP, Data Privacy, and Corporate Security) to provide legal input on everything from strategy to commercial colleague queries.
  • Ability to work autonomously whilst also escalating matters to Senior Legal Counsel when appropriate.
  • Highly organised and responsive, with the ability to maintain composure whilst working to tight deadlines.
  • Be highly driven, ambitious and focused on delivering a high standard of legal service to the business in a friendly, approachable manner.
  • The role will report directly to the Senior Legal Counsel (Team Lead)-brand (Consumer, Marketing and Advertising). You will be expected to support the supervision and development of future trainee solicitors in marketing and commercial work (where applicable).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • English-law qualified lawyer with a minimum of 2 years PQE, qualified in private practice or a relevant in-house environment.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating various agreements for UK and international businesses, including NDAs, influencer agreements, sponsorship and event agreements, and marketing and PR agency agreements.
  • Experience working in-house, ideally for a global brand, and advising on multi-jurisdictional issues.
  • Experience advising on legal aspects of technology or digital projects, such as software licensing, data privacy, or e-commerce.
  • Excellent knowledge of marketing, commercial and contract law.
  • Solid training and qualification from a leading city, national firm, or equivalent in-house environment.
  • In-house experience is essential. Experience in beauty or FMCG is desirable.
  • Attention to detail is critical.
  • Highly effective communicator (written and oral) at all levels. Confidence in communicating with stakeholders of all seniority levels.
  • Ability to be persuasive, interact effectively with the business, remain calm, and work under pressure.
  • Thrives in an agile environment, managing competing deadlines and working flexibly to meet the needs of the business.
