Job description

THE TEAM

At JSM Group, our legal team plays a vital role in ensuring the business operates within legal and regulatory frameworks while delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK. We’re now looking for an experienced and commercially minded Legal Counsel to support the business across a broad spectrum of legal areas, with a focus on infrastructure, utilities, and construction law.

SCOPE OF ROLE

As Legal Counsel, you will report to the Group Legal Director and work closely with both internal teams and external stakeholders. You will be responsible for managing and advising on a wide range of legal and contractual matters, including commercial agreements, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution. This role offers hybrid working based at our Potters Bar Head Office, with some UK travel.

HOW YOU'LL SUCCEED

  • Advising on legal matters across contract law, regulatory compliance, dispute resolution, and infrastructure-related legal issues
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial contracts, NDAs, construction agreements, supplier terms, and more
  • Maintaining legal templates and procedures, ensuring consistency and compliance across the business
  • Leading the contract process from discussion to execution, identifying and mitigating legal risk
  • Advising on and monitoring regulatory changes, especially within the utilities and infrastructure sectors
  • Managing legal disputes, from negotiation and mediation to litigation, aligning outcomes with commercial objectives
  • Collaborating with key internal teams (Commercial, Finance, Operations) to resolve legal issues and support strategic decision-making
  • Translating legal language into clear, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders
  • Supporting cross-functional communication to ensure alignment between legal and business priorities

WHAT IT TAKES

  • Significant experience in a law firm or in-house legal team, ideally within utilities, construction, or infrastructure sectors
  • Strong working knowledge of contract law, infrastructure projects, and commercial legal frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience drafting, negotiating, and managing contracts through to completion
  • In-depth understanding of UK regulatory frameworks relevant to the sector
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to balance legal integrity and business goals
  • Exceptional attention to detail, especially in reviewing and drafting legal documents
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly
  • Proactive, solutions-driven mindset, capable of working independently and within a small team
  • Experience with cross-border legal matters or international frameworks (preferred)

WHAT WE OFFER YOU

We truly value your work, time, and skills! In return, we will offer you a competitive salary and some additional benefits to support your professional growth, including:

  • Participation in mentoring and coaching programmes
  • 28 days of holiday (excluding bank holidays)
  • Pension scheme and private healthcare
  • 2 paid volunteering days a year
  • Hybrid working pattern
  • Continuous training and development, in both technical and business skills
