About the role

The Legal Counsel is an integral member of the Legal & Export Control Team, which is comprised of the Divisional Chief Counsel, one other Legal Counsel, the Head of Export Control, and the Export Control Coordinators.

The Legal Counsel will support the Divisional Chief Counsel in handling and resolving all legal, contractual, and compliance issues faced by the Division. They may also support matters related to other Group companies within James Fisher & Sons plc.

This role would suit a recently qualified solicitor with some post-qualified experience in a commercial law environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal and contractual support to the Division and its Product Lines.
  • Proactively support the Division Management to minimize legal, contractual, and compliance risks.
  • Review commercial contracts, draft contract exceptions, and negotiate client and supplier contracts.
  • Advise on the protection and management of intellectual property.
  • Support the Division sales teams with agency, teaming, and reseller agreements.
  • Manage litigations, disputes, claims, and supervise outside counsel.
  • Ensure operations comply with local laws and regulations.
  • Participate in the implementation and monitoring of JFS Compliance Program, including training on corporate policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Support the deployment of Group Legal Department initiatives and assist the Group Company Secretary Department.

What do you need?

We seek an individual capable of providing commercially focused and pragmatic legal advice, with strong communication skills and the ability to handle various stakeholder challenges. You should be a robust decision-maker, confident in communicating complex legal advice and ensuring compliance.

You must have a proven track record of delivering legal advice in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

Skills & Experience:

  • Qualified lawyer (preferably Scotland or England/Wales).
  • Solid knowledge and practical experience in contract and commercial law.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, adaptable to different audiences.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while managing multiple cases.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of operating outside comfort zones.
  • Flexible team player, willing to assist the wider legal team.
  • Experience in contract and commercial law, ideally in an in-house or private practice setting.
  • Desirable: legal compliance and IP experience.
