Job description

Responsibilities

Within this interesting role, you will be responsible for personally representing the Chief Constable in civil and administrative matters in both the civil and criminal courts. Your role is to properly discharge the Chief Constable’s responsibilities under relevant statute and common law, enabling the Force to achieve its objectives. This includes some advocacy in contested hearings, in areas such as:

  • Family Court proceedings
  • Orders in respect of sex offenders
  • Proceeds of Crime Act
  • Police (Property) Act
  • Disclosure
  • Licensing
  • ASB injunction applications
  • Stalking protection orders
  • Violent offender orders
  • Firearm revocation appeals
  • Inquests
  • Modern Day Slavery orders

The successful candidate will provide bespoke advice to the Professional Standards Department on misconduct proceedings and represent the department at hearings. You will also offer tailored advice on counter-terrorism matters, major public inquiries, custody, and operational issues. Attending and advising at GOLD groups, and providing advice to Silver Command during major events, public order situations, and firearms incidents, will be part of your responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practicing certificate, possessing proven advocacy and litigation skills. Excellent written, interpersonal, and advocacy skills are essential to effectively represent the Chief Constable before the courts and in other situations. You should be able to communicate legal concepts clearly to officers and staff at all levels. Mobility across the Force for investigations, court attendance, etc., is also required.
