Introduction to YSJ University

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset. We are proud to have been involved in teacher education at YSJ since 1841.

The Department

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) is part of the School of Education, Language and Psychology. Within ITE we offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes - a three-year BA (Hons) Primary Education programme, a one-year PGCE Primary programme (both university centred and school-centred) and a one-year PGCE Secondary school-centred programme in a range of subject areas. Partnership and collaboration are at the heart of our ITE programmes, and we work with a broad range of partners/schools across the region. Our partnership is well established and highly regarded across the region with many of our student teachers employed in local and regional schools.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic full time Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education (Primary), who is able to teach Science as a core specialist subject across all our primary ITE programmes, with the ability to teach other primary subjects like Art & Design, Design & Technology or Physical Education. Primary school experience, with working knowledge and understanding of the national curriculum, is necessary alongside experience of working with student teachers, either in a primary school setting or within an ITE department within Higher Education. As the largest provider of ITE in the region, the successful applicant would be joining a large team that supports around 550 student teachers each year. As such, there are exciting opportunities to work in subject teams for all primary subject areas and be part to a thriving academic and research culture.

Required Skills and Experience

It is essential that applicants possess a combination of both professional and academic qualifications. The post holder should, therefore, have qualified teacher status (QTS), teaching experience in a primary school, and experience of working with ITE students/programmes. Please make it clear in your application which subject(s) areas of the primary curriculum you have expertise in, in addition to the required core subject of Science. The ability to support teaching in wider Professional Studies would also be welcome. Ideally, applicants will have a doctorate and be research active, in order to support our developing research profile in the department.

The majority of your work will involve teaching in a variety of settings, including small group tutorials/seminars and lectures; assessment; and the provision of pastoral and academic support to student teachers. Your work will also involve liaison work with our partnership schools. You will be expected to join one of our research development groups with a view to contributing to research outputs.

Additional Information

For applicants not currently in possession of a doctoral qualification, there will be a clear expectation to work towards this.

Please note that this role can be available at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level depending on experience. Please refer to the Lecturer criteria and Senior Lecturer criteria documents, and provide evidence within the supporting statements section of your application to demonstrate that you meet the requirements. Please make it clear in your application whether you are applying for a Lecturer role or Senior Lecturer role.

Please contact Dr Keither Parker at k.parker@yorksj.ac.uk if you would like further information regarding the role.

It is anticipated that the selection process will include an interview and presentation. Further details will be provided if you are shortlisted for interview.

This role is eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, provided the relevant UKVI requirements are met. At this time, we're only able to consider sponsorship for candidates who are currently based outside the UK.
