Job Title: Lecturer in Mathematics, Queen’s University Belfast

The School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking to appoint a new lecturer to enhance teaching in mathematics, with initial responsibilities focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The successful candidate will support teaching on a new postgraduate MSc in Data Science with Machine Learning and AI, as well as contribute to broader teaching activities in mathematics within the School.

The Lecturer will also be expected to develop an ambitious, high-quality, internationally competitive research profile and undertake administrative and outreach activities. The research area is flexible but should align with or complement existing activities in the School, ensuring that teaching in machine learning and AI remains research-informed.

About the candidate:

The successful applicant must demonstrate:

  • Hold or be about to obtain a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong record of publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, suitable for REF, commensurate with career stage.
  • Evidence of independent contributions to research projects and outputs, appropriate for career stage.
  • Significant expertise in machine learning / AI within their research portfolio.
  • Potential to establish independent, sustainable research programmes.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality lecturing, supervision, or assessment activities at undergraduate or postgraduate levels in areas such as Mathematics, Data Science, Machine Learning, or Statistics.
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences, both orally and in writing in English.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment, promoting equality, diversity, and supporting early-career academics.
