The University of Manchester seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Globalisation, Trade and Development within the Global Development Institute (GDI). This three-year fixed-term post will enhance the GDI’s teaching and research in the fields of globalisation, trade and development.

The GDI has made significant advances in research and policy across the field of global development, including on global value chains, trade, the governance of supply chains and labour conditions therein. Applications are welcomed from appropriately qualified candidates in all areas of globalisation, trade and development, including those that can help extend our longstanding focus on gender issues within global value chains. This new appointment is expected to help deliver core teaching at postgraduate level in the broad field of globalisation, trade and development and provide wider support to students, at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. The post holder will also be expected to engage in cutting edge research within the areas of globalisation, trade and development through scholarly outputs, policy engagement and impact, competitive research grant capture and doctoral supervision.

The University welcomes applications from strong candidates who can make significant contributions to research and teaching that complements existing offerings in GDI and the School of Environment, Development and Education (SEED) that it is located within. The post-holder will join GDI’s Global Production Networks, Trade and Labour research group and contribute to related research, teaching and programme development. They will have the opportunity to network with relevant colleagues in other parts of SEED and key University-wide research platforms.

Applications are welcomed from appropriately qualified candidates in all areas of globalisation, trade and development, but particularly from candidates with an emerging track record of high-quality research. Prior experience of relevant postgraduate and/or undergraduate teaching will also be expected. Applicants must have a PhD in a field relevant to development studies (e.g. development studies, human geography, political economy), evidence of providing excellent teaching and a record of research success measured through high quality publications and grant success. Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to effectively contribute to multi-disciplinary teams. GDI is committed to mentoring and supporting all colleagues and particularly welcomes applications from under-represented groups within higher education in the UK.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we support an inclusive working environment and welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation and transgender status.
