This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
There is an expectation for the successful candidate to:
• Contribute to the teaching provision on existing modules as a member of the departmental team.
• Lead on the development of some new modules.
• Lead on the co-ordination and assessment of student work placements, mentor training, marking standardisation and oversee arrangements for the collation of student placement evidence.
• Develop teaching resources.
• Support the School’s activities, including Visiting Days and Open Days, as appropriate.
• Contribute to general activities within the School, such as the marking and moderation of assessments of other modules, and act as a personal tutor to students.
• Contribute to a proactive strategy and efforts of the School to promote student recruitment.
• Support collaboration and alignment with external organisations and accrediting bodies to ensure the currency and applicability of the degree schemes.
Development and Leadership
In collaboration with other departmental colleagues and in consultation with external professional bodies where appropriate:
• To contribute to curriculum design and delivery within the context of school’s provision by means of engagement with key departmental committees and structures and with key stakeholders.
• To engage with Aberystwyth University’s formal structures for curriculum development in the planning and preparation of new modules and in the delivery of excellent teaching and learning.
• To design, plan and validate new provision in collaboration with colleagues and to engage with others in AU to achieve the aims of the AU’s Teaching and Learning Strategy.
• To contribute to other provision (possibly scheduled outside term time) either for a commercial market or as a recruitment event, e.g. summer schools.
• To engage with departmental marketing and recruitment.
• To contribute to open and visiting days and/or student application and recruitment procedures and to participate in school visits and other recruitment and outreach events.
• To work with central services departments and other professional contributors to meet the imperatives of the student satisfaction, student representation and student progress and retention agendas.
• To engage as a Personal Tutor to ensure on-going learner development.
Teaching and Learning Duties
• Planning, preparation and delivery of undergraduate and, where appropriate, other taught provision within and across relevant departmental discipline areas at modular and scheme level.
• Writing or reviewing and updating teaching materials, as appropriate, in response to both departmental and AU Teaching and Learning policies and procedures.
• Contribution to the setting of a curriculum-based schedule of assignments.
• Assessment of assignments and completion of feedback in accordance with departmental and AU Teaching and Learning policies and procedures.
• Efficient engagement with examination procedures and processes including liaison with relevant External Examiner/s when relevant.
• Effective use of the AU IT systems such as Blackboard, Talis Aspire, Turnitin and Aladdin in the delivery of excellent teaching and learning.
• Pro-active contribution to the development of a departmental ethos to enable students to achieve their full academic potential.
• Work flexibly within the full range of the teaching timetable.
• Contribute to weekend Applicant Visit and Open Days outside the regular working pattern. There may also be some requirement to contribute to occasional additional provision that may take place outside the teaching term and outside normal teaching hours.
Scholarship Duties
• Engage in subject, professional and pedagogy research as required to support teaching activities.
• Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds for own scholarly activities.
