The Department of War Studies is part of the School of Security Studies within the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy at King’s College London. War Studies is home to large and diverse community of specialists in strategic studies, intelligence, international relations and history. About the role

The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in East Asian Security to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity. This is a five-year, fixed-term Education and Research position. Applicants will be expected to have a PhD.

The successful candidate will have an emerging track record in research dissemination and a clear research agenda. They will also be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and advancing understanding of East Asian security. They will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for contributing to student success.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the department at both BA and MA levels. Modules could include ‘War and Strategy in East Asia’, as well as ‘Contemporary East Asian Security’ and ‘US-China Relations’, but candidates may be asked to teach in other areas. Candidates should have expertise in contemporary East Asia regional security and foreign policy issues.

The postholder will also undertake and publish high-quality research and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of the Department. They will also undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.

The Department of War Studies is part of the School of Security Studies and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until end August 2030.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD awarded in War/Conflict/Security Studies, International History, International Relations or a related field, with expertise in contemporary East Asia regional security and foreign policy issues.
  • Experience and ability to deliver innovative and effective teaching to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students in war/conflict/security studies.
  • An emerging track record in research dissemination and a clear research agenda, as well as a proven capacity to relate research to teaching
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and proficiency in academic writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts within the department.

For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must have a PhD thesis published or in press as a monograph AND at least 2 papers published/in press in peer-reviewed journals; OR at least 5 research papers published/in press in high-quality peer reviewed journals. For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must also show proven ability in and experience of academic leadership.

  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or on-track to receive fellowship in the next 1-2 years.
  • Experience of successful grant capture
  • Experience of innovative curriculum and teaching design.
  • Experience supervising UG/PGT dissertations and/or PhD students.
  • A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities.
