We are seeking to recruit a social science scholar to join the Centre for Public Policy Research, a friendly and vibrant research centre which sits within the School of Education, Communication and Society in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy at King’s.

About The Role

The successful candidate will conduct high quality teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities, complementing existing strengths in the Centre for Public Policy Research. They will contribute to programme leadership, module coordination and teaching, personal tutoring and dissertation supervision on our BA Social Sciences, MA Education in Arts & Cultural Settings and other programmes as required. Their programme leadership responsibilities will initially comprise taking on the role of Deputy Director of the MA Education in Arts & Cultural Settings. They will also be responsible for the recruitment and supervision of doctoral students in their specialist research area.

The successful candidate will have teaching and research interests in anthropology, cultural studies, social policy, sociology, or a closely allied field, a strong interest in social in/justice and applied social science and a track record of producing high quality research publications.

They will also have proven teaching ability, expertise in enquiry-based, participatory and critical pedagogies, and a commitment to inclusive and democratic ways of working.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

Candidates should have the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria

  • PhD qualified in relevant subject area
  • Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English
  • Excellent teamworking skills and a strong commitment to inclusive and democratic ways of working
  • Expertise in anthropology, cultural studies, social policy, sociology or a closely allied field, with a strong interest in social in/justice and applied social science and an aptitude for communication across disciplines
  • Proven teaching ability and a strong interest and expertise in enquiry-based, participatory and critical pedagogies
  • Interests and a track record that would enable the candidate to contribute to the coordination and teaching of modules on the BA Social Sciences and MA Education in Arts and Cultural Settings. These might include, for example: Understanding the Social World; The Uses of Theory; Media, Culture & Society; The Arts, Culture and Education; Internship: Education in Arts and Cultural Settings
  • Ability and willingness to contribute to programme administration and leadership and make a broad contribution to module coordination and teaching in the School, including in areas beyond the candidate’s immediate specialism
  • A strong research, publications and knowledge exchange track record, with interests that complement those of existing members of the Centre for Public Policy Research

  • A research funding track record
  • A successful track record of programme administration and leadership
  • Successful experience of working with arts and/or cultural organisations

To Be Appointed At Grade 7 There Is An Expectation That Candidates Will Be Able To Evidence The Majority Of The Following

  • A completed teaching qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice
  • Having passed probation at a Higher Education Institution on an academic contract
  • A consistent track record of high quality publications over at least a three-year period
  • Having undertaken a significant administrative role.
