To assist in the management and education of children and young people with additional support needs (ASN).
A Learning Support Worker may be asked to work with any child or group of children either within a department or within a mainstream class. They may work alongside and with specific guidance from any teacher within a school. Work around an individual child may be based on an individualised education programme, which all staff working with the child/young person follow. This may involve collaborating with professionals and therapists such as Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Child Psychologists.

Sound Primary School is a non-denominational school located in the Sound area of Lerwick, providing education from nursery to Primary 7. The school currently has 1 nursery session per day and 11 primary classes. Staff includes 22 teachers (including Class teachers, Nursery teachers, Support for Learning Teachers, and Specialist Teachers), as well as nursery staff, clerical staff, support staff, supervisors, auxiliaries, crossing patrol assistants, and a janitor. The school is managed by a Head Teacher, Mrs. Ann-Marie Angus, and two Depute Head Teachers.
