To support the care, welfare, and education of children and young people with additional support needs (ASN) in accordance with relevant legislation, policy, and guidelines.

A Learning Support Worker may be asked to work with any child or group of children within a department, mainstream class, or early learning and childcare (ELC) setting. They may work alongside or under specific guidance from any teacher within a school. Work around an individual child may be based on an individualised education programme (IEP), which all staff working with the child/young person follow. This may involve collaboration with other professionals and therapists such as Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologists, and members of the Educational Outreach Service.

About Happyhansel Primary School

Located in Walls, Happyhansel Primary School is a non-denominational school providing nursery to P7 education for children from Walls, West Burrafirth, and as far east as West Houlland. The school comprises 1 nursery class and 2 composite primary classes, with a total of 36 pupils. Managed by Head Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Garrick (joint with Sandness), the staff includes 3 teachers supported by additional support staff as needed.

Additional Information

• The grade of this post is G.
• The pay rate includes Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4808 per hour.
• This is a temporary part-time post of 16 hours per week, 39 weeks per year, plus 6.24 weeks (pro-rata) paid holiday during school holidays. The contract is valid until 16 August 2026.
• Working hours are 10 am - 2 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
• Preferred candidates will need to join or update their membership with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme before a formal offer of employment.
• The successful candidate must complete registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) upon starting.
• This vacancy does not meet UK visa sponsorship requirements; applicants must not require sponsorship.
• No relocation package is available.
• Interview expenses will be paid from within Shetland.
• Flexible working arrangements are welcomed.
