To support the care, welfare, and education of children and young people with additional support needs (ASN) in accordance with relevant legislation, policy, and guidelines.

A Learning Support Worker may be asked to work with any child or group of children within a department, mainstream class, or early learning and childcare (ELC) setting. They may work alongside or with specific guidance from any teacher within a school. Work around an individual child may be based on an individualised education programme (IEP), followed by all staff working with the child/young person, and may involve collaboration with professionals and therapists such as Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologists, and members of the Educational Outreach Service.

Specific tasks of the Learning Support Worker include:
  1. To work effectively as a member of the staff team;
  2. To promote and value each child and support their inclusion and welfare;
  3. To support the delivery of a quality curriculum in a mainstream setting where a child/young person is included;
  4. To interact effectively, enthusiastically, and appropriately with children/young people to meet their individual education and care needs, including assisting with feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene tasks;
  5. To follow instructions regarding the implementation of individual education programmes (IEP);
  6. To evaluate tasks undertaken as set in the IEP, keep accurate records, and report progress to teachers;
  7. To supervise children/young people participating in activities in and out of school.

Aith Junior High School is a non-denominational school located in Aith on the west side of Shetland. The school comprises a nursery class, five composite primary classes, and a secondary department from S1-S4, with a total of 241 pupils. The current Head Teacher is Mr. Michael Spence.   • Please note that this job is not Career Graded. Candidates will be assessed during the selection process to determine if they meet the criteria for the qualified or unqualified Learning Support Worker role, which will influence salary, pay rate, and duties.   • The rate of pay includes Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4808 per hour.
  • This is a permanent part-time post for 30 hours per week, 39 weeks per year, plus 6.24 weeks (pro rata) paid holiday during school holidays.
  • Preferred candidates will need to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo an update check before employment.
  • This vacancy does not meet UK visa sponsorship requirements; applicants must not require sponsorship.
  • No relocation package is available.
