Job description

GSL Education’s North Yorkshire branch is currently recruiting for outstanding Learning Support Practitioner for an Alternative Provision that supports children and young people aged 5–16 who face barriers to learning in mainstream education in York,starting in September 2025.

About the School:

  • The school supports a large number of students with additional learning or neurodevelopmental challenges, such as ADHD and Autism.
  • An Ofsted graded ‘Good’ School in York, known for its specialist provision catering to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
  • The school offers a diverse and inclusive curriculum tailored to the individual needs of students, providing a supportive and nurturing learning environment.
  • The school has a dedicated team of experienced staff, including teachers, teaching assistants, and support professionals, who are committed to the well-being and academic success of every student.
  • The school emphasises the importance of building positive relationships and promoting social skills development among students, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
  • A relevant qualification in education, youth work, or a related field is desirable. Experience and a passion for working with students are highly valued.
  • Experience of working with children and young people with additional needs.
  • Proven ability to manage and improve student behaviour, with experience in implementing positive behaviour support strategies.
  • A genuine interest in the issues faced by students with SEN, and the ability to show empathy, patience, and understanding in supporting their needs.
  • Hold a Child Only DBS registered to the update service or be willing to apply for one with GSL Education.
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with additional needs.
  • Support students to access learning across a range of curriculum areas.
  • Promote engagement, attendance, and motivation.
    • Help create a safe and structured learning environment.
    • Liaise with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals.
    • Participate in training and development activities relevant to the role.
