The Learning Support Officer role at St James Catholic Primary School involves supporting children and staff where adjustments are required for children to access the curriculum. The position will involve working in a variety of support structures, including one to one, small groups and in-class support with students with diverse needs. The successful applicant will need to work under the direction of the Leadership team, specifically the Learning Diversity Leader, and classroom teachers.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • work in partnership with classroom teachers, Learning Support Officers, Allied Health and the Learning Diversity Leader to implement adjustments to learning materials and the environment, as outlined in student Individual Learning Plans (ILPs),
  • provide support for a student’s academic learning, behaviour program, personal care and toileting, physical care, or social progress throughout the entirety of a school day, including class, lunch and recess times,
  • maintain notes to record student progress as required by NCCD,
  • maintain a positive and stimulating learning environment by adopting a variety of styles, practices and approaches to cater for individual learning needs,
  • adopt intervention practices that foster learning and reflect contemporary theory and research concerning student learning and educational pedagogy, and
  • other duties as directed by the Principal or Learning Diversity Leader.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the following criteria:

  • demonstrate a commitment to the ethos of Catholic Education,
  • have relevant qualifications in education support within a primary school setting,
  • demonstrate understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children,
  • be caring, collaborative and enthusiastic,
  • be able to build and maintain professional and appropriate nurturing relationships with students, parents and colleagues,
  • be able to maintain confidentiality,
  • have a current Working with Children check and National Police check,
  • be flexible in carrying out a variety of tasks,
  • have strong administration and documentation skills, and
  • demonstrate initiative.
