About the School
St Edward’s College is a Catholic school, located in the heart of Liverpool, educating 11-18 year olds. With its strong track record of academic success, pastoral care, and enrichment of every student, the school has become highly popular and is consistently oversubscribed, receiving 900 applications for just 176 Year 7 places. The College has built close ties with the local community, including a partnership with its co-located primary school, forming the Cathedral Choir School for the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. The College offers a broad range of extracurricular activities, from music and drama to a wide variety of sports, and academic clubs such as mathematics and science, where students have excelled in national competitions. These activities are supported by excellent sports facilities, including an indoor swimming pool.
The thriving Sixth Form, with over 300 students, is one of the largest in the city and is further enhanced by the Honours Programme, which targets Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. In September 2024, the College appointed a new Headteacher, who has a compelling vision to make St Edward's College the preeminent Catholic school in the city and beyond. With their leadership, the College is set to enter an exciting new chapter, continuing to build on its successes and offering even greater opportunities for its students.

About the Role
The Learning Support Assistant is an essential part of the school’s academic staff, making a positive difference especially for pupils with special educational needs.
The LSA is required to support and work with class teachers to promote the highest standards of teaching and learning in and out of the classroom. They should be a proactive and diligent supporter of learning, working in harmony with the Catholic ethos of this school.
In the classroom:

  • Participate in planning and evaluation of learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback to teachers and the SENCO on pupil progress and behaviour.
  • Be an active presence in the classroom supporting the pupil but also providing additional support to all pupils as directed by the classroom teacher, especially working with individuals or small groups to support and promote learning in the classroom under the supervision of a teacher or HLTA.
  • Contribute effectively to the adaptation and delivery of support to meet individual needs
  • Adopt relevant strategies to support the work of teachers and HLTAs and increase achievement of all pupils including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • To support pupils’ social skills and to encourage them to interact with others.
  • To use a laptop or similar to make support revision notes for the SEN pupils being supported on the content of the lesson so the pupil has an aide memoire to help then recall and revise the lesson, ensuring these notes are both filed as appropriate and printed for the pupil’s use.

Beyond the classroom:

  • Work collaboratively with parents, teachers and other colleagues; positive relationships are vital in this role.
  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of the specific SEN needs of particular pupils including documentation such as individual learning strategy plans, and EHCPs, to ensure that learning is as effective as possible
  • Tutoring pupils online if they are unable to attend school via MS Teams or similar platforms.
  • To promote and support the highest standards of pupil behaviour, according to the school behaviour policy and mindful of the principles set out in staff training updates on behaviour.
  • To encourage pupil inclusion in all aspects of College life.
  • To assist in the supervision of pupils when off site.
  • To assist with general supervision and duties when required.
  • To assist with record keeping as necessary, and to actively monitor the effectiveness of individual learning plans being implemented for SEN pupils in their various subjects, reporting on these issues to the SENCO. To provide clerical support as necessary.
  • To attend meetings as required and to contribute constructively and creatively to discussions promoting the wellbeing and good learning of pupils.

THE ROLE
Training and capabilities:
Attend to pupils’ medical and personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating, as well as help with social and health matters, reporting problems to a teacher as appropriate.

LSAs must be fully conversant and highly competent with IT packages in use by teachers and pupils, including Microsoft Word / Excel / Powerpoint / Teams, Firefly, Class Charts, SIMS.
They must remain updated and flag up any training need they become aware of so this is quickly provided. To be familiar with whole school policies and implement them in line with their role, including (vitally) Safeguarding, First Aid and Health and Safety issues, and attend relevant training as required. To keep current up to date CPD/Training as appropriate including, but not limited to, First Aid Training, Restraint Training, Personal Care Training and any other relevant training as required by the College. Other: Prepare and clear up the learning environment

Personal Qualities
Previous experience an advantage.
