Job description

Position: Learning Support Assistant
Location: Oldham, Greater Manchester
Contract Type: Full-time, Temporary
Rate of Pay: 16.11 per hour
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role:
Are you passionate about supporting children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? We are currently looking for a dedicated and empathetic Learning Support Assistant (LSA) with experience in SEMH to join a dynamic team at a school in Oldham. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students who need extra support to thrive both academically and emotionally.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will provide tailored support to students with SEMH needs, ensuring they can fully engage with their learning while also supporting their emotional and behavioural development. You will work closely with teachers and other staff members to create a nurturing, structured environment where every student can succeed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and group support to students with SEMH needs in and outside the classroom
  • Assist in the delivery of personalized learning activities and support in achieving educational goals
  • Help manage classroom behaviour using positive reinforcement strategies
  • Support students with developing social and emotional skills, building resilience, and improving self-esteem
  • Work with staff to implement Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents/carers
  • Ensure students are fully included in all school activities, encouraging engagement and participation
  • Provide a calm and supportive presence for students who may experience emotional or behavioural challenges
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all students in line with school policies

Essential Criteria:

  • Previous experience working with students with SEMH needs (ideally in an educational setting)
  • A clear understanding of the challenges faced by students with SEMH and how to support them
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with students
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in managing challenging behaviours
  • A proactive and flexible approach to working with children and young people
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and collaborate with staff, parents, and external agencies
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Desirable Criteria:

  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Teaching Assistant Level 2/3, Youth Work, or similar)
  • Experience working with students with additional needs such as autism, ADHD, or learning disabilities
  • Level 2 Team Teach certification or a willingness to complete necessary courses
  • Knowledge of strategies for supporting students with SEMH, including behaviour management techniques
