Job description

SEN Teaching Assistant (Special Educational Needs)

Empowering Learning is currently working with an excellent SEND school in Southend-On-Sea. They are looking for a Teaching Assistant to join their school as soon as possible. The position will be based within a small class supporting children aged 4 - 19 with learning disabilities. You will be placed in the suitable age group that you work with best.

Most of the children you will work with have very limited communication skills, and some are completely non-verbal. You will support multiple classes and several children across the school, rather than working 1:1 with any particular child.

To be eligible for this position, ideally, you should have experience supporting pupils with PMLD (Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties) and their personal care needs.

Teaching Assistant Support

We are looking for the right candidate who can make learning participative and encourage peer learning. Relevant experience includes:

  • Using learners' own words, language, materials, and personal context; clarifying activity purpose and relating it to learners' skill needs.
  • Breaking down tasks into smaller steps and building up to the overall objective.
  • Communicating clearly in both written and spoken forms, following plain English guidelines.
Awareness
  • Being aware of learners from different minority ethnic groups, recognizing ethnicity as an important aspect of their identity.
  • Observing what works for each learner and what does not.
Communication
  • Listening closely to learners, responding to the content of their communication regardless of style.
  • Being mindful of language used by oneself and others, including non-verbal cues.
  • Sharing experiences to promote shared communication.

You should be available to start immediately and able to commit to working full school hours, 5 days a week.

If you have experience working with children or young adults with SEN and are interested in making a positive impact, please send your CV to (url removed) or call (phone number removed).

Empowering Learning Ltd. is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will need to complete Disclosure and Barring Service declarations in line with Section 115 of the Police Act 1997, provide two professional references from the last two years, and complete our online application followed by a video or face-to-face interview. Empowering Learning Ltd is an Equal Opportunities Employer and does not discriminate based on age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation.
