Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting a Learning Support Assistant for a secondary school in Gateshead. The role involves supporting pupils one-to-one and in small groups, including SEND students, to access the curriculum and develop confidence and positive learning habits.

You will work closely with teachers to adapt activities, monitor progress, and contribute to a supportive, inclusive learning environment that prioritises wellbeing and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or young people in a school, education, care, youth work, coaching or mentoring setting.
  • Interest in supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning.
  • Strong communication, literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Patient, calm and approachable manner.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and establish trust.
  • Comfortable taking direction from the class teacher and working as part of a wider team.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils one-to-one and in small groups to address learning and pastoral needs.

We're currently recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant to join a secondary school in Gateshead on a long or short-term basis, starting in September. This role could suit both new and experienced educators, including graduates looking to begin a career in education, SEND or pastoral support.

You'll be joining a supportive and inclusive school that places student wellbeing, inclusion and progress at the heart of school life. The school is committed to creating a positive environment where every young person feels supported, valued and able to achieve their potential.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Supporting pupils one-to-one and in small groups, responding to their individual learning and pastoral needs
  • Supporting students with SEND and additional learning needs to access the curriculum
  • Working alongside teachers to adapt activities and resources to meet individual needs
  • Helping pupils develop confidence, independence and positive learning habits
  • Providing targeted support to help students overcome barriers to learning and close learning gaps
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, engagement and participation in lessons
  • Supporting students who may experience difficulties with communication, concentration, emotional regulation or social interaction
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Supporting students during lessons, transitions, break and lunchtime where required
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral staff to provide consistent support
  • Monitoring and sharing relevant information about pupil progress, behaviour and wellbeing
  • Promoting an inclusive classroom where every student feels valued and able to succeed
Requirements or Skills:
  • Experience working with children or young people in a school, education, care, youth work, coaching or mentoring setting is desirable
  • A genuine interest in supporting young people and helping them overcome barriers to learning
  • Strong communication, literacy and numeracy skills
  • A patient, calm and approachable manner
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and establish trust
  • Comfortable taking direction from the class teacher and working effectively as part of a wider team
  • Resilient and confident when supporting students with challenging behaviour or additional needs
  • An understanding of SEND is desirable, but not essential
  • Graduates with relevant degrees such as Psychology, Education, Sociology, Childhood Studies, Youth Work or other related subjects are encouraged to apply
  • A Level 2 or 3 qualification in education, childcare, supporting teaching and learning or a similar area is desirable, alongside relevant experience
