Job description

There is an exciting opportunity to join a strong team of Learning Community Support and Learning Community Managers that form part of the support structure within Emily Wilding Davison school.


We aim to appoint a Learning Community Manager who will support both the Academic and Social and Emotional Mental Health development of all the students. We are looking for experienced and ambitious practitioners who have a range of skills and experiences and who can join and complement the Pastoral Team.


In September 22 Atkinson House School became The Emily Wilding Davison School and is Northumberland County Council’s only designated provision for pupils aged 11 – 16, with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) for up to 100 students. The school relocated to Ponteland, in a £5.5m refurbished school, and is co-educational to students who travel from all over Northumberland.


Our vision is to provide a high quality educational and therapeutic community, which offers life-changing opportunities in preparation for adulthood, within a safe, creative and exciting environment. All students have their Learning, Social and Community Capital baselined, with an ambitious structured personalised programme to close gaps in academic and social norms, ensuring that all students are ready for the next stage in their lives.


Applications are invited from outstanding support practitioners who can demonstrate outstanding relationships and outcomes across The Emily Wilding Davison School. You must also be able to demonstrate recent, successful impact within your current role.


The successful applicants will benefit from significant support from our Head Teacher and Leadership Team. A personalised CPD package will be provided to support your transition into the school.


We are looking to appoint Learning Community Managers for:
  • Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Pastoral Managers
  • Family Liaison / Transition
  • Thrive Practitioner
  • Alternative Curriculum Tutor
  • Teaching in the Community Tutor

Each Learning Community Manager will:
  • Monitor and support attendance
  • Build positive relationships with students and home
  • Support safeguarding issues: work and attend meetings with internal and external agencies
  • Respond to daily issues
  • Work alongside the Educational Psychologist to create individual therapeutic intervention and support plans
  • Lead small groups/individuals with intervention within Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Support specialists within their lessons - Conduct outreach work

We are looking for candidates who have a strong understanding, who can relate to students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health and be an advocate for the students. This Support role is to build positive relationships with students within the Key Groups (and across the school), work with internal and outside agencies and have an ability/willingness to engage in proactive mentoring support for each student.


For a successful Learning Community Manager, we aim to appoint someone who:

  • is fully committed to working collaboratively and to being an active, dedicated member of our team
  • will actively show initiative and work independently
  • is enthusiastic, flexible and committed to raising standards of attainment and achievement for all pupils
  • is able to promote links with other schools and with the wider community
  • is willing to uphold and develop the ethos of The Emily Wilding Davison School
