Job description

Are you an experienced Occupational Therapist (OT) or Physiotherapist looking to advance your career and develop your operational management and leadership skills?

We are seeking a Lead Therapist to join our Spinal Injuries Team, which includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, therapy support workers, and an activities coordinator. Based in the Osborn building at the Northern General Hospital, the team provides services to acute, rehabilitation, readmission, and outpatient cases involving Spinal Cord Injury.

The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre is a 60-bed, supra-regional facility accepting patients with spinal cord damage due to trauma or pathology from a wide catchment area in eastern England. The centre features dedicated beds for ventilator-dependent patients.

The Spinal Injuries Therapy Department includes a physiotherapy gym, hydrotherapy pool, sports hall, main OT treatment area, heavy workshop/project room, therapy kitchen, assessment bedroom, assessment bathroom, computer room, and assessment flat.

Our well-established multidisciplinary team works collaboratively in patient assessment and management. The Centre maintains links with other Spinal Injuries Centres nationwide to ensure quality service delivery.

In your role, you will provide operational management and leadership for inpatient and outpatient services. Supporting staff wellbeing, education, and professional development is a key aspect. We seek someone with excellent communication, organizational, and people skills to foster a positive and supportive team culture.

Applicants should have a high level of specialist or senior post-registration experience as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist in an acute hospital setting. The ability to analyze complex problems, develop solutions, and implement sustainable change is essential, along with confidence in working with senior professionals.

While the role is primarily leadership-focused, there may be opportunities to carry a small clinical caseload. Clinical experience within Spinal Injuries is advantageous but not mandatory, as training can be provided. There is no requirement for weekend or on-call duties at this time.

You will collaborate closely with the Clinical Service Manager, Clinical Specialists, and fellow Lead Therapists to ensure an equitable and resilient service delivery.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for either a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist to develop their skills in operational management and leadership.

Opportunities for professional development include:
  1. Development of supervision and mentorship skills
  2. Opportunities to deliver and receive teaching & training
  3. Participation in and/or leadership of quality improvement initiatives
  4. Involvement in clinical governance, assurance, and management forums
  5. Enhancement of operational, service delivery, and line management skills, including HR processes

We value and respect our staff and the community we serve. The Trust is a leader in the NHS and research sectors, offering excellent staff benefits, including support for professional development and policies promoting work-life balance.
