Job summary

Qualifications

  • NMC or HCPC registration required with significant theatre experience.
  • Extended theatre leadership experience required.
  • Scrub leads require relevant Scrub Practitioner qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of patient safety protocols and infection control.
  • Experience with audits, service improvement, or clinical teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of perioperative care across the theatre pathway.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership for theatre staff and support staff.
  • Mentor junior staff and students; promote CPD.
  • Ensure WHO surgical safety checks are followed and documented.
  • Support audits and service improvements within the theatre.

Job description

Lead Theatre Practitioner - 12 Months Fixed Term Bishops Wood Hospital 37.5 Hours & Fixed Term Salary: Up to £52,000.00 per year (depending on level of experience, training and qualification)

Bishops Wood Hospital in Middlesex is part of Circle Health Group, Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country. We have an opportunity for a Lead Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatre department. This is a full-time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties of this role include:
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway, acting as a specialist or functional lead within the team.
  • Ensure that all patient safety checks, including WHO surgical safety processes, are carried out in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain clinical credibility by demonstrating best practice, supporting others, and taking the lead in complex or high-risk situations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support the development and assessment of competencies within the team, promoting continuous professional development.
  • Actively mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified team members.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant experience in a theatre environment (e.g. scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model to peers.
  • Extended theatre experience as a senior theatre practitioner essential.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.
  • Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification [for scrub leads].
  • ENB 998 and/or mentorship course.
  • Approved / recognised anaesthetic course.
  • ILS.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to personal development and supporting the development of others.
  • Specialist training in a defined clinical area (e.g. orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
  • Experience in leading audits, service improvement projects, or clinical teaching.
  • Previous experience working within the independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
  • Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.

  • Fixed Term Salary: Up to £52,000.00 per year (depending on level of experience, training and qualification).
