Salary: £85,000 GBP

Working Arrangement: Hybrid (2 days onsite)

Location: Chelmsford, East of England, United Kingdom

Type: Permanent

A leading defence technology organisation is seeking a Lead AI & Machine Learning Technologist to join their expanding Data and Decision Support team. This role involves leading AI research projects in areas such as reinforcement learning, NLP, large language models, knowledge graphs, and AI applications in radar, sonar, and remote sensing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading complex AI research and development projects
  • Providing engineering assurance on proposals, publications, and technical deliverables
  • Mentoring junior researchers
  • Presenting technical outcomes to diverse audiences
  • Fostering collaborations with academic and industry partners

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • 10+ years' experience in AI/ML research and development, preferably in the defence sector
  • Leadership experience managing R&D teams of 5 or more
  • Experience in engineering assurance activities
  • Proven ability in proposal writing for government and public sector funding
  • Expertise in reinforcement learning, NLP/LLMs, knowledge graphs, or related domains
  • Published research is a plus
