Job description

An exciting opportunity for a Lead Pharmacy Technician in the Controlled Drugs Room has become available on a 9-month secondment, as the current post holder is going on maternity leave. This role is ideal for an experienced Pharmacy Technician looking to develop their skills and gain more experience in this area of pharmacy.

Joining a team of Lead Technicians, this role supports the Chief Technicians in ensuring the delivery of a safe and high-quality pharmacy service. Within the Lead Technician group, the successful candidate will manage the day-to-day coordination of the controlled drug room to ensure a timely and accurate top-up service.

This position offers a great opportunity to enhance leadership and organisational skills within a busy acute hospital pharmacy setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide training and assessment for pharmacy dispensary staff in line with the Trust's CD policies to ensure high-quality service provision.
  • Manage stock levels and ensure accuracy of stock balances, investigating discrepancies promptly according to Trust CD policies.
  • Order and receive controlled drugs from suppliers.
  • Complete legal paperwork related to controlled drugs and ensure proper filing.

Additional duties include:

  • Supporting staff training in line with Trust's CD procedures and staff validations, collaborating with the Pharmacy Education and Training team.
  • Dispensing and checking controlled drugs to wards, ensuring they are listed on ward stock lists, and liaising with clinical ward teams regarding stock issues.
  • Overseeing daily stock management and ordering in the controlled drugs room.
  • Organising and leading regular stock takes, including year-end audits, ensuring procedures are followed, and discrepancies are investigated and reconciled with the Chief Technician.
  • Managing the destruction of patient-own medicines (POM).
  • Monitoring service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure quality, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Reviewing and improving service standards and provisions through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting staffing management, including absence coverage, in line with the Trust's Wellbeing and Attendance Management policy.
  • Participating in the recruitment and selection of pharmacy dispensary staff.
