Job description

Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

This is an exciting opportunity for an R&D System Engineer, working on product development in the GE Vernova Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, within Grid Automation (GA).

The M&D product line is a leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers. It covers sensing of multiple asset types and includes advanced technology to help customers understand and optimize the operating condition of key assets such as power transformers and circuit breakers.

This Systems Engineer role focuses on supporting the development of Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) products within the GE Vernova technology team. The successful candidate will contribute to system design, documentation, validation, and improvement activities, working closely with lead engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products and features.

This role is technical and hands-on, requiring the ability to think independently, curiosity about the product, engagement with hardware and software, and a focus on quality and safety.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and apply system expertise to refine and develop M&D monitoring products, demonstrating understanding of operational principles, design, and usage.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams to define, design, and develop new system concepts and features for M&D monitoring products, supporting key projects.
  • Work hands-on with electronics, mechanical parts, and basic software integration (e.g., scripting, test firmware) to build and iterate on early design concepts, considering long-term system architecture and manufacturability.
  • Produce early-stage system design documentation, such as block diagrams, interface definitions, and communication protocol summaries.
  • Maintain well-documented builds, ensuring traceability and clarity of setup and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with teams to understand customer needs, system requirements, and constraints.
  • Participate in system testing and validation, recording results systematically.
  • Present prototype findings and data to inform design and reduce risks.
  • Work with international and cross-functional teams, with potential travel.
  • Apply GE Vernova principles with a safety-first mindset.
  • Perform additional duties as requested by the line manager.
Essential Criteria
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in relevant engineering, scientific, or technical field.
Experience
  • Design of industrial products and systems from concept to deployment.
  • Hands-on prototyping with sensors, embedded systems, or electromechanical devices.
  • Familiarity with lab tools and safe lab practices.
  • Hardware troubleshooting and quick iteration using first principles.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to explore design options.
  • Experience working with diverse, remote teams.
  • Clear technical communication skills.
  • Safety-conscious mindset, especially with hardware and test environments.
Desirable Criteria
  • Masters degree or equivalent.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools, PCBA layout, embedded software, Agile, and industrial sensor systems.
  • Experience in product development from concept to deployment.
  • Knowledge of lean practices and continuous improvement.
