Job description

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) are seeking a dynamic and motivated Lead Sonographer for general Ultrasound at Lewisham Hospital. This role offers an opportunity to work in a busy clinical environment and to be part of an expanding ultrasound service.

The service operates across University Hospital Lewisham (UHL), Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), and the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), providing a range of diagnostic studies. The post holder will manage the General Ultrasound Department at Lewisham Hospital.

This position is suitable for an experienced Sonographer interested in managing an ultrasound service, teaching, and clinical governance. It offers a chance to lead a team and deliver excellent patient care.

The Lead Sonographer will oversee the daily operations and clinical leadership of the ultrasound service, including workforce management, maintaining standards, service delivery optimization, and ensuring resilience amid increasing demand.

Responsibilities include acting as the primary contact for ultrasound at Lewisham, managing clinical practice, staff development, rota management, and service planning. The role also involves cross-cover for obstetric sonography during leave periods.

The post requires collaboration with radiologists, radiographic assistants, clerical teams, outpatient services, A&E, and inpatient units to ensure efficient service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership and Management: Support the ultrasound team, manage staff welfare, development, and performance, and oversee staffing rotas and recruitment.
  • Service Delivery & Planning: Increase capacity to meet demand, optimize appointment booking, and ensure safe, effective service across all lists.
  • Clinical Governance & Quality: Maintain standards, support audits, incident reporting, and infection control.
  • Workforce Development: Support training, upskilling, and continuous learning initiatives.
  • Operational & Financial Management: Act as budget holder, monitor expenditure, and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work with radiologists and other teams to support service development and effective communication.
