Solar-powered Energy Independence - Synth Solar

Synth is a UK-based solar climate tech startup, at the intersection of technology and operations. Started in early 2024, and launched that summer, Synth has now completed over 40 residential and commercial installations, has revenue to date of over £500,000 and is profitable.

Founded by ex-Uber General Managers Tom Elvidge and Max Lines, who after a decade in tech and climate startups, launched Synth to support the Net Zero transition.

Synth’s mission is to reduce the price that our clients pay for electricity, through the installation and smart application of solar and battery storage technology.

Synth provides full-stack solar design, installation and monitoring services, regarding the installation as the start of a multi-year partnership with clients to continually optimise the system and minimise their energy costs.

Synth supports residential and commercial clients through the complete journey, from initial solar design, through equipment selection, installation and commissioning, system performance monitoring and ongoing support.

We have a firm belief in technology as a critical enabler, and are building proprietary tools to improve customer experience, maximise savings, and radically streamline operations. Within the first months we launched Synth’s SunMapper tool, reducing the time to receive a solar estimate from days to seconds. This is a UK first in the solar industry - and we are just getting started.

We are right at the beginning, have incredibly high ambitions for Synth and are on a mission to become a UK market leader in renewable energy. Furthermore, we believe that with a clear vision and first-class execution, there will be many more opportunities for us along the way.

The role

We are seeking a Roofing Technician / Solar Installer to join the core Synth team. This is one of the most vital hires we will make—half of the technical delivery powerhouse that will allow Synth to consistently execute high-quality installations at scale.

This individual will be responsible for the physical mounting of solar systems onto rooftops, ensuring installations are completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and professionalism. They will work alongside our Principal Electrical Engineer to deliver seamless installs and exceptional customer experiences.

We're looking for someone who is proud of their craft, thrives under pressure, and wants to help build something enduring from the ground up. You’ll need to care deeply about the details, take real pride in the quality of your work, and be relentless in making sure our customers get the very best.

This role isn’t about following the status quo—it's about setting a new bar for what rooftop solar installs should look and feel like in the UK.

???? What you’ll be doing

You’ll be the lead for the roofing and mounting aspects of Synth solar installations—working directly with the founders and engineering team to deliver world-class systems with speed, safety and precision.

Specifically, you will:

  • Lead the rooftop mounting and installation of solar PV systems (tile, slate, metal, flat, and integrated roof types)
  • Work closely with electricians to coordinate installation phases from mounting frames to cable runs and equipment fit-offs
  • Conduct site assessments and roof surveys to identify structural considerations and plan safe, efficient installs
  • Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations, including roof access, fall protection, and equipment use
  • Keep quality and presentation of the installation to the highest standards—wiring routes, rail alignment, panel finish, and sealing
  • Liaise directly with customers during installation to represent Synth with professionalism and confidence
  • Take a leadership role on-site and in the warehouse—receiving goods, managing inventory, and preparing job kits
  • Continually feed into improving Synth’s installation processes and systems to unlock future scale
  • Experienced, capable, and take real pride in your work
  • Hard-working and unafraid of the physical demands of rooftop installation
  • Obsessed with getting the detail right—rails dead straight, tiles perfectly sealed, cables tidy and invisible
  • Clear-headed under pressure and able to solve problems on the fly
  • A true team player—happy to jump in wherever needed to get the job done
  • Excited about working in a mission-led business building for the long term
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, change, and the fast pace of a startup

You have

  • Experience with solar PV installations from a roofing or mounting perspective
  • Experience installing a variety of mounting systems (GSE, Renusol, K2, etc.)
  • CSCS / CITB / PASMA / Working at Height qualifications
  • A clean UK driving licence
  • Strong understanding of safe working practices on roofs
  • Ability to work at height and in all-weather environments
  • Experience leading installation teams on-site
  • Previous work on slate, flat-roof, and integrated systems
  • IPAF or scaffold experience
  • Experience with battery storage systems and inverter placement
  • Comfort using basic tech tools (iPad, mobile apps, file upload, job tracking)
  • Additional bonus for quality and performance
  • Full-time, long-term role: with real progression and leadership opportunities
  • Training: support with qualifications, product training, health & safety certs
  • Equipment: tools, PPE, branded workwear, vehicle
  • Join a high-performance, tech-driven team with an ambition to redefine what solar delivery should look like
  • Help shape the future of residential and commercial solar in the UK

Synth's co-founders Tom Elvidge and Max Lines have a track record of building early-stage tech companies in highly operational industries. They met at Uber where they joined the UK business when it was fewer than ten people, and were General Managers and UK leaders who oversaw growth from one city to over 50, building Uber UK to a business of over $2.5bn in 5 years.

Subsequently, Max was a member of the founding team at Oyster HR, growing the business to ‘Unicorn’ status in under 18 months. Tom was part of the leadership team at the electric vehicle company Arrival, which secured the title of the UK's largest tech IPO in 2021.
