Job Title: Lead Software Engineer

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Edinburgh

Working style: Hybrid 50% home/office based

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Technical Lead to join our team at Royal London. As a Technical Lead, you will play a crucial role in managing the design, development, testing, and smooth operation of our applications.

You will deliver development and test services to our business. Responsibilities include tool selection, vendor management, and the technical roadmap for one or more Royal London applications, ensuring continuous improvement in availability, currency, and commerciality. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with a strong technical background and a passion for problem-solving to contribute to our organization's growth and success.

This is a progressive role within the pensions applications teams, delivering scalable solutions to both our customers and employees. You will have the opportunity to work on various initiatives across pensions, collaborating with stakeholders across the group.

About the role

  • Provide problem management and incident resolution (production support) for the platform they are responsible for.
  • Build trusting relationships with key stakeholders and internal customers.
  • Provide expertise on methods and tools needed to deliver change through the specialist platform.
  • Ensure technical upgrades and maintenance are scheduled, working closely with relevant third-party vendors.
  • Manage the team’s performance against key deliverables and measure quality against internal benchmarks.
  • Oversee the performance of third-party vendors against contractual obligations and SLAs, and identify opportunities to leverage new capabilities within the platform to add value.
  • Build trusting relationships with stakeholders and internal customers.
  • Contribute to financial planning and portfolio activities across the group. Lead recruitment of permanent and flexible resources.

About you

  • Broad knowledge of IT, application development techniques, and best practices in application design and development.
  • Experience managing technical teams, including workload and people management.
  • Knowledge of working with cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to apply specialist knowledge to solve complex problems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading technical evaluations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
