Job summary

FTSE Russell in London is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to own the technical direction of our data platforms that power financial indices used globally.

You'll design and ship production systems, primarily in Python, while bringing cross-language experience (Java, C#, C++, Scala, Go, Rust) to lead in Python. This hands-on IC role emphasizes architecture, mentoring, and strong engineering standards.

Qualifications

• Python is preferred but depth in other languages is valued.
• Depth in software design and architecture; define boundaries and interfaces.
• Strong ownership of technical and production outcomes.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL / Aurora PostgreSQL; data modelling.
• Solid AWS experience and CI/CD, automation, testing, and delivery practices.
• Experience with data-intensive systems, including area.

Responsibilities

• Designing, writing, reviewing, and shipping production software, primarily in Python.
• Owning technical direction and architecture for a defined area of the platform.
• Leading the design of software systems and interfaces with resilience, performance, and maintainability.
• Raising engineering quality through code review, shared components, testing, and secure practices.
• Mentoring engineers through pairing, code reviews, and design guidance.
• Considering failure modes, operation readiness, security, and cost in design.
