Your resume and cover letter, tailored to exactly what they’re hiring for.
Raymarine is seeking a Lead Software Engineer in Fareham to blend hands-on coding with people leadership across several scrum teams. You will line-manage up to eight engineers, guide architectural decisions, and maintain production-quality software while championing modern AI-augmented development workflows.
You will balance technical delivery with growth, wellbeing and performance reviews, reporting to senior management. The role is hybrid with four days in our Fareham office.
We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to combine hands-on technical work with people leadership. You will be first line manager for up to eight engineers spread across several scrum teams, covering a range of Software Engineering disciplines and seniority levels from Apprentice to Principal. You will remain an active contributor, with development skills at least equal to an experienced Senior Software Engineer. That means designing and building production-quality software, reviewing code with authority, guiding technical decisions, and setting the standard for engineering practice. You will be expected to know your way around modern, AI-augmented development workflows and to show your reports how to use them effectively and economically. As a line manager, you will be responsible for the growth, wellbeing and performance of your reports. This includes regular one-to-ones, objective setting, performance reviews, career development plans, recruitment and onboarding. Your reports will work in different scrums and specialisations, so you will work closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters and Principal Engineers. Together you will balance individual development with team delivery, spot skills gaps and coverage risks, and make sure engineers are deployed where they add the most value. You will act early on underperformance, champion good work, and build an inclusive, psychologically safe environment where people can do their best work. The ideal candidate is a credible engineer who has found that they get as much satisfaction from developing people as from shipping code. You will be comfortable switching between technical detail and people matters, often in the same day, and will communicate clearly with engineers, stakeholders and senior management alike. Previous experience of line management or formal mentoring in an agile environment is strongly preferred. So is a track record of improving engineering practices, delivery predictability and team health across more than one team. As a guide you should expect a 60/40 split technical work to line management. Job Role
