The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Structures Engineer to join our Amey Consulting Structures team in Scotland. We have design hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen, with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn, and Huntly.

Our Amey Consulting Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all career stages to be involved in some of Scotland’s most exciting and challenging engineering projects related to the arterial road network.

The Role

Our Lead Senior Engineers play a vital role within the Design team and work alongside our client, Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support and assist your Design Team Leader on various civil schemes, take the lead on projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, adhering to all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
• Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
• Overseeing junior staff actions and being responsible for their work.
• Managing project budgets and controlling costs for the projects within your portfolio.
• Liaising with client and supplier representatives, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
• Contributing to bid preparations and work-winning activities.
• Driving health and safety practices within the team.

What You Will Bring

• Experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, likely gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
• Ability to produce and check high-quality engineering designs that comply with standards and client requirements, working independently and supervising others.
• Experience in managing health, safety, and welfare aspects related to projects.
• Capability to act as a main engineering contact for projects, such as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail schemes.
• Knowledge of design and specification processes, with the ability to advise and check designs to a high standard.
• Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
• Understanding of CDM regulations and risk management, with experience in hazard and risk communication and mitigation.
• Ability to act as Principal Designer for suitable projects.
• Supervisory skills and experience managing a medium-sized technical team.
• Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional license is desirable and may be essential for certain contracts.
