Job summary

Our client in Falkirk is seeking a Lead or Senior Instrument Engineer for a permanent or contract role outside IR35, with some hybrid working flexibility. The position focuses on delivering instrumentation, control and automation across the full project lifecycle, with emphasis on safety and compliance.

The role requires strong technical leadership, experience across FEED to commissioning, and Chartered Engineer status or active progression toward it.

Qualifications

• Degree in Instrumentation, Control, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status preferred or working towards chartership.
• Significant experience in instrumentation, control and automation engineering in chemical, oil & gas, energy or manufacturing sectors.
• Experience delivering projects through concept, FEED, detailed design and commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Deliver instrumentation and control engineering designs per project specifications and standards.
• Produce, review and approve instrument specifications, datasheets, control philosophies, I/O schedules and loop diagrams.
• Support hazard studies, design reviews, SIL assessments and functional safety activities.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
• Support site surveys and commissioning activities.
• Participate in design reviews and assurance activities.
• Assist with preparation of estimates to support proposals.

Senior Instrument Engineer

Role Overview

The Senior Instrument Engineer is responsible for the technical delivery, coordination, and assurance of instrumentation, control, and automation engineering activities across all phases of a project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover. Ensuring engineering solutions are safe, compliant, fit for purpose, and delivered in accordance with project requirements, applicable standards, and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver instrumentation and control engineering designs in accordance with project specifications, client requirements, and applicable industry standards.
• Produce, review, and approve discipline deliverables including instrument specifications, datasheets, control philosophies, instrument indexes, I/O schedules, and loop diagrams.
• Support hazard studies, design reviews, SIL assessments, and functional safety activities.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure integrated and effective design solutions.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements.
• Support site surveys, and commissioning as required.
• Participate in design reviews and assurance activities.
• Assist with preparation of estimates to support proposals.

Essential Experience

• Significant experience in instrumentation, control, and automation engineering within chemical, oil & gas, energy or manufacturing sectors.
• Strong knowledge of instrumentation design, control systems, field devices, and industrial communication networks.
• Experience delivering projects through concept, FEED, detailed design, and commissioning phases.
• Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations, and functional safety requirements.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Instrumentation, Control, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership) preferred.
• Certified Functional Safety Engineer preferred.
• Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution desirable.
