Job summary

Amey is seeking a Lead Senior Engineer (Bridges) to join our Consulting Structures team in Newcastle. You will lead design efforts on road schemes, mentor junior designers and drive technically sound engineering solutions that meet client standards.

You will manage deliverables, oversee budgets, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to win bids while embedding health and safety best practices in all work. This permanent role offers hybrid working options and UK-wide career opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience and expertise in bridges or civil structures.
• Strong understanding of structural engineering principles.
• Ability to oversee production of technically sound designs and deliverables.
• Knowledge of software/tools including Midas, LUSAS and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design.
• Chartered status or equivalent professional licence and active engagement with professional standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team to deliver technically sound bridge and civil design solutions.
• Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to meet quality, cost and schedule criteria.
• Oversee junior staff and manage their development.
• Contribute to project budgets and commercial performance.
• Liaise with clients and suppliers, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
• Support bids and work-winning activities.
• Promote health and safety practices within the team.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Engineer to join our Consulting Structures team.

Located in the heart of Newcastle, our new office at St James's place provides a modern, flexible workspace designed for collaboration and innovation. You will join a vibrant team of engineers, project managers, data analysts, commercial experts, safety specialists and operatives working together on some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects in the region and nationally.

The role

Our Lead Senior Engineers play an important part within the Design team. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of road schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers.

Responsibilities Include

• To lead a team to product technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
• The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
• Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
• Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
• Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
• Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
• Drive effective health and safety practices within the team

We Want To Hear From You If You Have

• Experience and expertise in bridges and / or civil structures, gained in an Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
• Sound understanding of structural engineering principles.
• Ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and Client’s requirements.
• Ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables
• Knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (eg Midas, LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
• Good commercial awareness.
• Experience in effectively managing HS&W risks.
• Collaborative, proactive approach to problem solving with experience in a multi-disciplinary team
• Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence
• Bachelors or Masters degree in a relevant subject or equivalent further learning.
