Job summary

American Society of Civil Engineers is seeking an experienced Safety Engineer to support UK defence programmes on a hybrid arrangement with travel to MOD Abbey Wood and other defence sites. The role requires SC clearance and focuses on safety leadership across major defence projects.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in System Safety Engineering within defence or regulated environments.
• Proven track record delivering Acquisition Safety in defence programmes.
• Strong understanding of hazard analysis, safety cases, risk management, and safety management systems.
• Experience leading safety assurance activities across multiple systems or projects.
• Knowledge of UK defence acquisition processes, ASEMS, and relevant legislation.

Responsibilities

• Providing authoritative Safety Leadership and technical advice across projects.
• Leading safety activities, hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety case development.
• Conducting independent reviews, audits, and assurance activities to ensure compliance with ASEMS, MOD policies, and international standards.
• Managing hazard logs, safety requirements, and supporting safety governance throughout the project lifecycle.
• Developing safety policies and best practice standards, fostering continuous improvement.
• Engaging stakeholder communication—both technical and non-technical—to influence decisions and support safety priorities.
