About The Role

National Grid Interconnectors is at the forefront of delivering low carbon electricity between Great Britain and Europe. With a portfolio of 7.8GW of interconnection capacity, we provide infrastructure to move power to where it is most needed, providing security of supply and access to affordable power for the countries that we connect.

We are currently recruiting for a Lead Safety Engineer within the UJV Interconnector portfolio to work at our oldest and biggest interconnector in Sellindge, Kent.

As a Lead Safety Engineer you'll provide the highest level of Safety, Health and Environmental management including System Safety (Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions) specialism. You’ll lead on enhancing the Interconnectors operational SHE management arrangements, improvement initiatives and facilitating effective communication and the sharing of best practice with internal and external stakeholders across UJV Interconnectors.

Please note due to the onsite location of this role you will need to be able to drive and must hold a full UK driving licence.

Key Accountabilities

  • Create a positive safety culture across our Locations by communicating, embedding and ensuring SHESQ procedural compliance and consistency within the UJV Operations teams.
  • Lead on guidance and interpretation of Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions to staff in the business. Undertaking audits as required, including Safety From the System works and Safety Authorisations.
  • Lead on all Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability issues, including statutory compliance (PUWER, LOLER, CoSHH, etc.), using a high level of SHES knowledge.
  • Lead and monitor the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Environmental Incident Reporting and Investigation processes, ensuring investigations are carried out in a timely manner; to acceptable standard; with appropriate actions and sharing of learning.
  • Lead on guidance and interpretation of SHES procedures and Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions to staff in the business. Support training and development of staff on SHE & System Safety topics.
  • Carry out Authorisation interviews for the Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions roles.
  • Compile and deliver monthly reports on metrics related to SHES and Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions performance.
  • Support Site Managers with relevant statutory requirements, to ensure legislative compliance.
  • Interface and support wider safety-related training including setting the standards; representing the business; identifying improvements; and providing feedback.


About You

  • Subject matter expert in Safety, Health and Environmental management including System Safety (Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions) specialism, within the electrical transmission system (or similar).
  • Currently or previously authorised as Senior Authorised Person to NG Safety Rules.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the roles within the Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent;
  • Typically, a wide range of experience which could have been attained across work in Convertor Stations, Overhead Lines, Substations work and HV cable systems, encompassing electrical, mechanical, and telecoms engineering disciplines.
  • Effective people management and communication skills, in a delivery environment across a range of staff & leading a dispersed multi-disciplined team;
  • Minimum HNC or equivalent in a STEM discipline, preferably electrical engineering;
  • Full Car Driving licence (UK).

A competitive salary between £58,929 – £74,916 dependent on capability.
