Job summary

Rolls-Royce SMR in the UK is seeking a Senior Reactor System Design Engineer to lead the development of complex process and mechanical designs across the Reactor Island. You will translate high-level requirements into robust design solutions that meet stringent regulatory and safety expectations.

This role offers exposure to the full lifecycle of system design, from concept through detailed design, substantiation and licensing, supporting safe and efficient delivery of the Rolls-Royce SMR

Qualifications

  • Proven experience delivering complex system design work within nuclear or other highly regulated industries.
  • A degree in engineering or relevant technical discipline, or equivalent industry delivery experience.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements management and integrated design approaches.
  • Practical experience in mechanical or process system design (fluid systems, HVAC, chemical, plant).
  • Ability to produce and review detailed technical documentation (P&IDs, calculations, substantiation reports).
  • Strong communication skills to engage across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and proactive approach, with leadership and mentoring capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of system design packages to programme requirements and timelines.
  • Develop and manage system requirements with traceability and verification.
  • Produce high-quality engineering documentation including design reports and substantiation artefacts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and regulators to resolve challenges and maintain momentum.
  • Identify and manage risks and opportunities within the design scope.
  • Apply design governance and configuration control for quality and compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers and develop the team.
