Job Role: Lead/Principal Hardware Engineer - Digital Electronics

Work pattern: Hybrid, at least 2-3 days/week working in our Warwick office

Nicholas Associates has an exciting opportunity to work for an innovative & award-winning client within the tech industry.

Overview:

We are looking for a talented and experienced Lead/Principal Hardware Engineer to work on hardware (and embedded software) for our client's exciting range of products. You will be part of their strong research and development team, which includes electronics hardware, embedded software, cloud & backend software, and mobile app development. Your work will be crucial to the success of their current and future products. You will have the opportunity to lead the hardware/firmware team and manage work packages. This role is initially technical but could develop into a line management position for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect and design robust products from concepts and specifications, aligning with requirements and bringing innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Lead and mentor a small team, providing hands-on development support.
  • Oversee PCB design and layout, ensuring best practices and high-quality results.
  • Define and specify test plans for hardware verification and production testing.
  • Identify and implement improvements to testing and diagnostic processes.
  • Support environmental and EMC testing during product qualification.
  • Perform and oversee circuit analysis, including power, tolerance, and reliability assessments.
  • Collaborate with other teams to capture design requirements.
  • Deliver digital electronics designs from architecture to production, preferably with a focus on battery-powered, MCU-based applications.
  • Supervise PCB design & layout.
  • Possess a good understanding of embedded C for microcontrollers.
  • Be familiar with interface buses such as SPI, I2C, UART, and USB.
  • Design with DFx principles (safety, testability, manufacturability).
  • Apply test & verification techniques supporting product lifecycle development.
  • Experience managing a small team or work packages is highly desirable.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with environmental and EMC testing during product qualification.
  • Experience with battery-powered Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices.
  • Some knowledge of analogue electronics design is advantageous.
  • Experience in smaller companies or start-up environments with broad responsibilities.
  • Fluency in firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Knowledge of certification processes (CE and FCC).
