Job summary

Sir John Hunt Community Sports College is seeking an exceptional Lead Practitioner - Teaching & Pedagogy to raise English excellence and mentor colleagues through instructional coaching.

You will champion evidence-informed approaches, develop literacy across curriculum, and strengthen teaching, assessment and student outcomes.

Based in Plymouth, you will model high standards, support staff across the College, and contribute to curriculum design to secure higher grades.

Qualifications

• Lead Practitioner role with English focus and pedagogy
• Experience in evidence-informed teaching approaches
• Ability to mentor colleagues through coaching and modelling classroom practice

Responsibilities

• Model exemplary classroom practice through teaching English and an open-door culture for observing effective pedagogy
• Research, evaluate and share evidence-informed approaches to improve teaching quality and student outcomes
• Support the implementation and development of Principles of Teaching to promote high expectations and effective scaffolding
• Develop teachers' pedagogical expertise including explanations, modelling, questioning and guided practice
• Provide specialist leadership for students with lower prior attainment and ensure high expectations with appropriate scaffolding
• Provide specialist expertise in literacy, reading and phonics across curricula
• Model English Direct Instruction for explicit, structured teaching
• Support departments to embed literacy and language development in planning and practice
• Contribute to curriculum and resource development to improve instruction and outcomes
• Support staff to strengthen teaching and assessment to raise grades across subjects

• Model exemplary classroom practice through the teaching of English and maintain an open-door culture that enables colleagues to observe effective pedagogy.
• Research, evaluate and share evidence-informed approaches to improve the quality and consistency of teaching and student outcomes.
• Support the implementation and development of the College's Principles of Teaching, promoting classrooms where every student thinks hard, participates fully and produces high-quality output.
• Develop teachers' pedagogical expertise, including effective approaches to explanation, modelling, questioning, checking for understanding, guided and independent practice, scaffolding and responsive teaching.
• Provide specialist leadership in the teaching of students with lower prior attainment, supporting teachers to maintain high expectations alongside effective scaffolding and support.
• Provide specialist expertise in literacy, reading and phonics, supporting teachers across curriculum areas to develop students' reading, writing, vocabulary, oracy and disciplinary literacy.
• Model and develop effective approaches to English Direct Instruction, particularly for students requiring explicit, structured and carefully sequenced teaching.
• Support departments to embed literacy, reading and language development effectively within curriculum planning and classroom practice.
• Contribute to curriculum and resource development where this strengthens the quality of instruction and improves student outcomes.
• Support staff across the College to strengthen teaching and assessment so that more students achieve higher grades in all subjects.
