Job summary

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled Lead Pharmacy Technician to manage the Moorfields Private Pharmacy service across City Road/Bath Street. You will oversee dispensary operations, support medicines management initiatives, and lead a small team including Pharmacists and ATOs in a busy ophthalmic setting.

The role includes training responsibilities, implementing KPIs, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • NVQ level 3/BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science (Essential).
  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with GPhC.
  • ACPT qualification or working towards ACPT.
  • Educated to GCSE Maths and English.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee development of technical Pharmacy service across Moorfields Private.
  • Supervise workload, rosters and medicines management initiatives.
  • Train rotational Pharmacists and support education of Pharmacy staff.
  • Support service developments for private patients and RDCEC.

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated band 6 pharmacy technician to join our Moorfields Private team at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Previous ophthalmic pharmacy experience is not required; however, a solid background in providing a pharmacy service within clinical services as well as operational running of pharmacy dispensary services would be essential.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder will carry out the role of Lead Pharmacy Technician in Moorfields Private and assist in the provision of high quality, patient focused, safe, effective and efficient Clinical Pharmacy Services for Moorfields Private outpatients, laser, day‑case and paediatric patients.
  • They will act as line manager to Pharmacy Technicians and/or Pharmacy Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs) and will be responsible for overseeing the smooth running of day‑to‑day operational activities and medicines management initiatives. They will provide specialist Pharmacy technical input into medicines optimisation contributing towards both operational and strategic developments.
  • The post holder will oversee and support the training of rotational Pharmacists on aspects relating to the technical and operational tasks within Moorfields Private (MP) Pharmacy and contribute to the education, training and development of the Pharmacy technical workforce.
  • The post holder will support and work with the Moorfields Private Pharmacy Operations and Development Manager and the Moorfields Private Specialist Pharmacist on service developments and improvements including services provided to the private patients in the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC) to ensure that Pharmacy services meet the needs of the users.
  • The post holder will be required to act as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) as stated in departmental procedures.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Dispensary and Clinical Services
  • To oversee the development of the technical Pharmacy service throughout Moorfields Private (MP) at City Road/Bath Street and the management of the MP Pharmacy dispensary at Bath Street on a day-to-day basis to ensure that a safe and efficient service is provided to patients.
  • To supervise the management and prioritisation of the work processes in the MP pharmacy at Bath Street and to ensure adequate cover is in place at all times to maintain an efficient service, including late shifts and Saturday rotas where applicable.
  • To oversee the supply and distribution of Emergency Resus Medication to all MP wards and clinics.
  • To provide support for other technical staff in developing specific Standard Operational Policies and Procedures for their area of responsibility within the MP Pharmacy in conjunction with Specialist Pharmacists in MP.
  • To ensure adherence to legislation in relation to supply of medicines.
  • To ensure that all processes and procedures relating to Controlled Drugs stored within the MP Pharmacy are adhered to at all times.
  • To contribute to the development of supplementary Patient Information Leaflets and procedural documents relating to the use of unlicensed medicines.
  • To ensure medication safety at all times and that all patients are counselled by appropriately trained members of staff on effective and safe use of their medicine.
  • To ensure that all medication incidents are recorded on the Trust Safeguard system by staff operating in MP Pharmacy and support the MP Pharmacy Operations and Development Manager in the investigation, review and closure of these incidents.
  • To implement initiatives resulting in cost‑effective use of resources, resulting in improved patient care, and more efficient service.
  • To provide training to all relevant staff on technical procedures within the MP Pharmacy.
  • To communicate effectively with all MP Pharmacy staff regarding any medicines management or technical Pharmacy service‑related matters.
  • To maintain good working knowledge of all ophthalmic pharmaceutical product developments and new products.
  • To provide information and feedback to the Moorfields Private Pharmacy Operations and Development Manager and the Moorfields Private Specialist Pharmacist with regards to operational and clinical service provision and to provide analysis of data that can be used for strategic development of the service.
  • To participate in the development and implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the service.
  • To resolve, advise on and respond to patient complaints, emergency and non-routine Dispensary and Technical Pharmacy service situations within MP pharmacy.
  • To respond to all patient related complaints in a professional and prompt manner providing support to staff working within MP Pharmacy, addressing patients personally and responding promptly to all verbal and written complaints, carrying out any necessary investigations, drafting a written response to the patient for review by the Moorfields Private Pharmacy Operations and Development Manager and to implement any immediate actions required to avoid replication of the issues arising.
  • To ensure the correct management of stock in MP Pharmacy and clinical areas within outpatient clinics and at ward level.
  • To act as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and Medicines Management Technician as per service requirements and needs.
  • To generate invoices and manage invoice queries for outpatients and/or discharge prescriptions using Compucare system.
  • To collect prescription charges following relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • To reconcile the contents of the Pharmacy Card machine with the Finance department staff on a daily basis.
  • To support the implementation of new medicines management strategies and be involved in projects or initiatives that seeks out new opportunities for delivering medicines management across Moorfields Private.
  • To ensure that quality monitoring systems are in place and that these are being used correctly and reported through agreed channels, and that appropriate actions are developed and implemented.
  • To undertake medicines quality management audits, prepare reports and action plans and to raise non‑conformance to medicines related standards and support the development and tracking of mitigation plans.
  • To help audit the service against set standards and assist in the review of the service provision within MP Pharmacy.
Education and Training
  • To liaise with the Lead Pharmacy Technician for Education & Training to ensure implementation of any E&T programmes for MP Pharmacy Technical staff.
  • To act as an NVQ assessor to support the E&T Lead Pharmacy Technician in the training of Pre‑registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) and Assistant Technical Officers/apprentices within the MP Pharmacy.
  • Act as a role model and provide educational and training support for new members of staff, e.g. pre‑registration Trainee Pharmacists, Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technicians (ACPTs), Pharmacy Technicians, Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs) and pharmacy students.
  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • To co‑ordinate and contribute to the training of other members of the multidisciplinary team within outpatient clinics and at ward level.
Staff Management
  • To be responsible for recruitment and selection of dispensary technical staff and assistants.
  • To act as direct line manager to Pharmacy Technicians and other technical staff working within Moorfields Private Pharmacy and to be responsible for their appraisals, sickness absence and performance management and all related procedures for these groups of staff.
  • Assist in the supervision of all aspects of work by junior staff to ensure that procedures are carried out according to local policy and with due regard to the GPhC standards of conduct, ethics and performance.
