Job overview

We are looking for an experienced anticoagulation practitioner to lead and support this team to provide safe, effective clinical care.

The anticoagulation team sits within clinical haematology. The anticoagulation clinics are largely nurse & pharmacist led and supported by the medical team.

There is a large nursing team across the specialities in clinical haematology consisting of the day unit, haemophilia, MPN, ITP, Research and red cell. Each area has a lead nurse who together form the senior nursing team for clinical haematology.

The anticoagulation department delivers a service to patients at all sites and supports primary care practitioners in all regions running their anticoagulation clinics. We have a home visit service operating out of the Whipps Cross and Royal London sites. The post holder is required to work across all sites of the Trust throughout the duration of his/her contract, to ensure the development and provision of an equal and standardised anticoagulation and thrombosis service across the Trust. They will be expected to plan, support and drive developments in the service according to patients’ needs.

Main duties of the job

The role of the lead nurse practitioner for anticoagulation and thrombosis is to ensure the smooth management of staff and service across Barts Health anticoagulation clinics and to improve and develop the service for patients requiring venous thromboembolism prophylaxis.

They will demonstrate expert practice using a high level of clinical autonomy, involving complex facts or situations. The post holder will act as an expert resource in anticoagulation and thrombosis care throughout the Trust for nursing and medical colleagues.

The post holder will be expected to contribute and lead aspects of VTE prevention and care across the Trust and be a pivotal member of the Trust VTE board chaired by the deputy Chief Medical officer.

They will spend a minimum of 40% of their time working directly with patients, ensuring that people using the NHS continue to benefit from the very best expertise. The remainder of their time is protected for management and service development, education, audit and personal development.
