Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Lead Midwife for Practice Development & Maternity Education to manage the PD Team and the education programme in maternity services. The role focuses on high-quality learning opportunities, development of interprofessional training, and supporting staff, including newly qualified midwives.

Working with the Midwifery Leadership Team, the post holder will ensure learning aligns with CQC standards, MIS criteria and NMC codes,

The Practice Development (PD) Team is central in our commitment to enhance the quality of the clinical learning environment and deliver meaningful, supportive learning and development opportunities within maternity services.

The post holder will operationally and strategically manage Maternity’s Practice Development Team and Maternity’s education programme.

They will lead on the educational provision of ongoing learning and development within maternity’s clinical environments by ensuring the provision of high-quality learning opportunities and supportive educational input and professional development activities for learners and staff within maternity services.

They will be responsible for the development and delivery of interprofessional learning opportunities and training programmes, ensuring a learning culture that promotes equality and values diversity.

This role has been created to work in collaboration with the Midwifery Leadership Team to provide learning and development support to all maternity staff but especially those who are newly qualified or newly appointed staff.

They will work collaboratively with the Midwifery Leadership Team to ensure learning and development within the service meet CQC standards, the MIS criteria, NMC codes of conduct and other relevant national and local guidance.

Main duties of the job
  • Work collaboratively with the Midwifery Leadership Team to ensure learning and development within the service are benchmarked against and meet CQC standards, the MIS criteria, NMC codes of conduct and other relevant national and local guidance.
  • With the Director of Midwifery, plan a schedule of education and training that is geared towards relevant aspects of service development.
  • Lead development and delivery of inter-professional learning and develop and nurture professional education programmes for the multidisciplinary team, aimed at encouraging ‘life-long learning.
  • Lead on and co-ordinate the development and on-going training for newly qualified and newly appointed midwives and maternity support workers
  • Work with the Midwifery Leadership Team to develop and deliver high standards of women centred, evidence-based care
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of multi-professional education provision in the maternity department. They will lead OxMUD, PROMPT and support the Fetal Wellbeing Day as well as facilitating other training

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Be strategically, managerially and operationally responsible for the Practice Development Team which consists of Band 7 PD Midwives, Recruitment and Retention, Fetal Wellbeing Midwives, Professional Midwifery Advocates and Wellbeing Midwives, Midwife for Adult Leaners and Lead Midwives for Internationally Educated Midwives.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and high level of motivation by showing a strong commitment to the maternity service.
  • Be accountable for midwifery performance and achievement of all relevant organisational targets and standards, working within the Trust’s governance framework and current regulatory and policy requirements. To be aware of local and national guidance for maternity services regarding assessment of fetal wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate excellent personal communication by establishing effective links between the maternity services and the University.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate education and learning opportunities for new and existing employees within the service in compliance with competency frameworks and guide and support newly qualified professionals during their preceptorship.
  • Prioritise workload to meet targets and be able to work under pressure by seeking creative solutions to challenges.
  • Be responsible for ensuring clinical practice is in line with Data Protection/Confidentiality/Caldicott principles. To ensure communication networks are in place to share confidential information across organisational boundaries where appropriate.
  • Promote interdisciplinary working, with outcomes aimed at the best interests of the women and their families.
  • Be responsible for managing changes in clinical practice and service delivery throughout maternity services to meet the needs of women and their families
