Job description

EQUANS is seeking a Lead Mechanical Fitter/Engineer for our Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital contract. This full-time, permanent role offers a competitive salary and benefits.

Role Overview:
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and inspections of mechanical building services, adhering to standards, procedures, legislation, and guidance.
  • Represent the company professionally and respectfully.
  • Conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical systems as per schedules and training.
  • Respond promptly to breakdown requests as directed by supervisors or contract requirements.
  • Assist with minor installation, upgrading, and adaptation works.
  • Systematically diagnose faults on malfunctioning equipment safely and logically.
  • Follow safe working practices and use equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records, both written and electronic.
  • Work flexibly with colleagues and support other trades as needed.
  • Participate in callout/standby duties after qualifying period.
  • Coordinate with wards and departments to minimize disruption during work.
  • Undertake training to develop new skills and maintain service standards.
  • Perform site risk assessments as instructed.
  • Collaborate with partners and colleagues to deliver customer-focused service.
  • Use initiative for decision-making, including out-of-hours work.
  • Complete job documentation diligently and within set timeframes.
  • Perform any other tasks relevant to the role.
Additional Skills:
  • Technical knowledge of steam boilers and related equipment.
  • Problem solving for water systems and heating issues.
  • Participation in lifecycle planning and meetings for laundry systems.
Impact and Complexity:

The engineer maintains healthcare estate systems, ensuring statutory and contractual obligations are met while delivering excellent service. They form part of a team that ensures the estate operates efficiently, supporting healthcare delivery and extending equipment lifecycle.

The role involves duties within trained competence, with support from on-site technical teams for specialized tasks.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Experience in maintenance environments.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Services or equivalent.
  • Experience with AHUs, FCUs, LTHW, pumps, pipework, valves, chilled and potable water systems, and water hygiene.
  • Pipe fitting experience (desirable).
  • Experience with PPM and reactive maintenance.
  • Authorized Person Mechanical Systems.
  • Steam system experience (desirable).
  • Plumbing system experience.
